Useable Battery

I was just reading on the MG forums that their 61kw model has a usable battery of 57kw with the rest held in reserve, so wondered if VW did the same.

So, is the useable battery of my 52kw ID.4 actually less than 52 (when new) or do VW do the opposite and provide a real 52kw with some unadvertised overhead held in reserve?

The ID.4 is 52 usable and 55 total. The 77 has 82 total.

The MG5 LR I have is 57.7 usable and 61.1 total.

The MGZS LR is 68.3 usable and 72.6 total.
That's good, VW advertises 52 and has 52 then, whereas MG advertises 61 and only has 57 usable, good news and honesty / transparency for VW owners, not so good for MG.
Gross vs useable is very well understood in the EV community, and technical specifications usually clarify it. One thing that owners and even dealers do not understand well is the battery degradation, especially the very first 1kWh loss that would happen within the first few months itself and it is due to the chemistry. Fortunately, all cars have good BMS that hide this initial as well future degradation cleverly.
