Vibration noise from near side rear wheel area

10492 Views 54 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  donald
Is anyone else experiencing a vibration noise coming from the offside rear wheel area when going over slightly uneven road?

It sounds like something is loose or “wobbling about” in that area.

I have managed to record it but I can't seem to upload the file to this post.....is not not something that is permitted to be uploaded?

Thanks for the update.
It will be interesting to see if other people will report this issue or whether it will be an isolated exception.
Just heard from the Service Manager.

They have replaced the shock absorbers and taken the car out for a test drive, but the knocking noise is still there !!

Their Master Tech is on the case and they will report back to me tomorrow.

Their problem is that as it's a new model, they have no reference point or history on the type of vehicle as this will be the first instance of the issue they have come across.

Disappointing.
So I have just heard back on the ID4, from the dealer.

They have now sent a Technical Query into VW as they are clearly stumped as to where this noise is coming from.

No idea how long this is going to take.

We pick up an ID3 this Saturday so I hope that goes much better than the ID4..... my dealer has had my ID4 in their workshop longer than I had it on my drive !!
This is becoming curious.

This is what I'm thinking:

-They replaced a bad shock with another bad shock, or they replaced the wrong one.
-The tyres could be making the noise, either something wrong with the balancing, defects on the beads, or the thread resonates at a certain speed. Winter or all-weather tyres can do that.
-The Nissan Leaf's Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP) system's speakers sound like a whine outside the car, but inside the car somehow it sounds like a rolling sound. When you switch it off, it also switches off. So it could be the speakers of that system.
-It could be brake pads or shoes with too tight a tolerance
-It could be a bad bearing somewhere on the wheel, on the gearbox or in the motor.

That all sounds very plausible and I have no idea what they have tried to date, unfortunately.

I have just written an email to the dealer (Sales Manager) confirming the current situation but also to state that I would like to understand what my options are if we are still in the same situation this time next week. I really want this car fixed as it is so nice to drive, etc., but I need an ID4 (mine or replacement) by the end of May as my wife and I are planning to travel up from Bournemouth to Dundee to see her family.
We picked up my wife’s ID3 this morning. While there, the sales guy mentioned that another ID4 they sold recently also has the same vibration noise as mine.

The Service Manager has now logged a Technical Query with VW, so hopefully we will get some positive news next week.
They've made sure the transport thingies have been taken out? I'd also take out any stuff that's in an under boot floor area.

Sounds like tailgate or bumper trim rubbing or banging about to me. Are the back seats secured properly too?

Annoying thing to happen. You'd think they'd make sure all new bits on a car aren't broken

I can only assume that they have removed everything as far as the PDI is concerned.

I had already removed the cables, warning triangle, first aid kit, etc. and the parcel shelf and had the seats up and down.... and still the noise continued.

I just have to wait until Tuesday now, for an update.
I suspect one of the techs will end up lying in the boot while another drives it down the road!

Most likely, yeah.......unless they have already done that??

I'd hope they have rather than just putting it on a lift and waggling stuff.

Update - Now that VW (UK or Germany - not sure which?) have listened to the noise, they have suggested to the dealer to replace the Top Shock Absorber Mount(s).

They have ordered the parts but they are not due to be delivered until Wed 12th May.

So we shall see what happens after they are replaced and the car is road tested again.

I will be interested to see the outcome of your issue as I have a similar noise coming from the rear of my ID.4 which I am going to have the dealer look at when it goes in to have a tow bar fitted.

So you have listened to the audio file and it sounds the same (the wobbly/knocking noise)?

Interesting. I will certainly keep on updating on the progress.

It is now getting quite depressing as I really like the car and desperate to get out in it. Fortunately, we picked up my wife's ID3 last Saturday so at least we can use that one at the moment so I don't need a loaner at the moment.

I did listen to the audio file and I have a knocking noise from the rear,I checked the car without anything stored and it is only audible on certain surfaces. I am having the VW tow bar fitted some time in June when the kit arrives from Germany apparently it takes several weeks to have certain parts delivered and I will ask them to investigate whilst it is in for the fitting.

So this is the latest update:-

The replacement Shock Absorber Top Mounts are still due to arrive at the dealer tomorrow and they will then install those to see if that fixes the issue.

However, VW has also told the dealer to replace the front anti-roll bar drop links as well. I don’t if this still needs to be done if the new top mounts fix the issue? Maybe VW have now seen the same problem on other ID4's and know that the drop link replacement will fix it... who knows?

Anyway, the drop links were ordered yesterday and won’t arrive at the dealer until Saturday (15th) or Tuesday (18th).

So I guess I have to wait until next week to see what happens next?

Replacing the Top Mounts did not fix the fault, which I think everyone thought would be the case.

I have contacted the Sales Manager at my dealer and stated that if replacing the front drop-links does not fix the fault either, then I will be rejecting the car.

He was fully on board with that and I have said that I would be happy with a like for like replacement. My only concern is that the ID4 no longer attracts the PICG so I do not want to lose out financially as mine was ordered prior to the change in PICG.

The saga continues (but not for much longer!!).

Replacing the front drop links did not fix the fault. This has been fed up to VW and escalated to the factory, apparently. The factory now wants the dealer to swap out the shock absorbers ......AGAIN!!

This was tried three weeks ago. The Service Manager can only think that the shock absorbers have either since been modified or the factory knows something, that he doesn't, about the original ones that have been tried. Fortunately the replacement set are in stock so they will get them fitted tomorrow.

I have told them that, If that doesn't get the fault fixed, then I am rejecting the car and requesting a replacement.

Thanks for the updates.
Hope for you that this fixes it.

Needless to say the new shock absorbers did not fix the noise. Service Manager now wants to replace the springs. He will also feedback current status back up to VW.

However, the Business Manager has suggested we start the rejection process now while waiting to see if replacing the springs works.

I’m happy with that approach.

I was hoping to have the ID4 back in time for our Bournemouth to Dundee trip in a few weeks time but looks like plan B will be to go up in my wife’s ID3.
