FT article on H2 power in Europe.

“You won’t see any hydrogen usage in cars,” said Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess. The idea of a big market for vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells is “very optimistic”, according to Diess, who has overseen a €35bn push into electric cars. “Not even in 10 years,” he told the Financial Times, “because the physics behind it are so unreasonable.”

It's what we plebs have been saying for ages. The mirai has been a total dud. The Hyundai Nexo they suggest you should only buy it if you live within 15 miles of a hydrogen station which probably reduces the pool of potential buyers to a small puddle.

Even trains are better to fully electrify than use Hydrogen, Hydrogen is cheap to produce but very expensive to transport and store. The majority of it is used in industrial processes on site where it is produced. Still useful for replacing Hydrocarbons in industrial processes but I think the Fossil Fuel companies were hoping to divert people away from EVs and promise Hydrogen sometime in the future that never comes.

The Irony is that when Hyundai first started researching Hydrogen cars 20 odd years ago the Electric Vehicle side of the technology that needed to be developed for Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles was eventually used for BEV's, who knew! :)

I am pretty sure the head or heads of one of the big German marques poo-poohed the idea of electrification in cars when the Toyota Prius came out almost 25 years ago, with words to the effect of “too heavy, too complex, not efficient enough”. Ok it was probably in relation to hybrids but those descriptive words can still be used to describe their own and most recent purely ICE cars today!
