If it's packaged right, I reckon the entire powertrain (traction battery, motor) could weigh in at more or less the same weight as your average 1.6 DOHC motor & gearbox?

Hmmm, point of those things are power/weight... Would a decent battery array just weigh it down and spoil handling?
The 192 cells in a Nissan Leaf pack weigh 151 kgs;

A 100kW (135HP) UQM liquid cooled motor and controller weigh 77 kgs;

So, not that very different from an ICE and fuel tank... if you also replace the gearbox and differential with an eGeardrive (as used in the Tesla Roadster and our VW conversion) you are probably at parity :D
