I'm collecting my ID3 tomorrow, 1st edition, so I'm expecting the £500 charging credit.
Does the we charge card come with the car with the credit already loaded or will I need to order a card?

If it comes with a card can I use it straight away or will I need to register it and wait for it to be activated?

We are planning to drive to the dealership in the e-Golf and it will need charging on the way home.
We drive past Cambridge Services with the Ionity chargers so I'm hoping I can start using the credit straight away.

From what I gather, it should be presented to you with the car, not sure if it’s pre-activated or not.

I didn’t get one, and wasn’t even sure if it was coming with one as I wasn’t a ‘first mover’.

However, I already had a WeCharge card for my e-Golf in case I ever needed to use Ionity as a last resort.

When I added the ID.3 to the WeConnect ID App, it recognised the car as an ID.3 1st Edition and the WeCharge plan I already had (the basic 79p per kWh one) was upgraded to Plus with no monthly fee, the €0.29 per kWh charge and the €600 credit added as well. It went surprisingly well.

I think I’ve seen you mention that you already have the WeConnect ID App already? What you should be able to do now is sign up for the basic WeCharge plan that is free, but say you’ve already got a card so they won’t send you one. Then tomorrow register the Elli/WeCharge card to the App as soon as you have it, then add the ID.3 and it should upgrade everything as mine did.

It did say when I registered my card to the App that it might take 24 hours for the card to be registered on all the charger databases, but hopefully that should be pretty quick on the Ionity ones.

I had to ask for one, I've not registered it yet. I read we have until the end of March to register so I was going to wait as the availability of chargers on the network is pretty limited at the moment. I also hope to use it for my Model 3 with Ionity on holiday in the summer.
I didn't get the first edition pack either (not sure if you should) but I'll certainly be asking for the free charging piece.

I got mine in the gift box in the car when I collected it this week. The card is in the box & can be registered & used straight away according to the instructions as you run through the process. I've registered mine but not actually used it yet.

You have to register for a We Charge account & provide your credit card details, then you can add the pre-paid card afterwards. Just register for the free version.

If your dealer is moderately friendly & helpful, you could always ask them to send you the code from the front of the card in the morning so you can register a bit in advance rather than messing around when you collect. If you're in Tier 4 like we are, you can't go in the showroom. We were just able to have a quick look around the car from the outside then drive away...

You might not want to activate it until you have checked out the availability of chargers in your area. The cards for 1st edition owners can now be registered up to 31 March 2021, and then are valid for 12 months. Originally they had to be activated by 31 Dec 2020.
I find accessing the German routeplanner using Chrome and auto translation, the simplest way to locate chargers as the app can take a lot of zooming in to find a charger:
Routenplaner | Volkswagen Deutschland , you need to select We Charge in the filters.
Partners in the UK include: IONITY, Charge Point Services Ltd, New Motion B.V., Engenie (Osprey), Elmtronics Ltd, ESB Group, Alfa Power

Thanks all. Yes we are in tier 4 so no idea how it's going to go tomorrow. We collect at 10am so not going to be able to call before we leave.
@Tooks I do already have the we connect ID app for the Golf and have started to register the ID but need the code from the car to get any further.

I started to register for the charge card but didn't know if I needed to ask for a card or not. I think I'll wait until the morning in case I get there in case, like @Malcolm Hedges I don't get a card.

Anyone else buy from Vindis at Huntingdon? Might give a clue as to how switched on they are to EVs

I know I drive past the Cambridge Services Ionity chargers twice a week. I don't need a charge very often but it's a convenient loo stop so I might be plugging in more often than I need to, especially in a few months time when the 12 months are disappearing quickly.

You need to download and setup the ID3 WeConnect app for your car. You can then access the WeCharge section and order the card. It takes around a week to arrive and then you activate it via the app.
Used our card successfully today for the first time at an Osprey charger.

You can put your current e-Golf VIN in the WeConnect ID App and then register for the WeCharge/Elli service through that, you’ll just need a credit card. You get an option to have a new card sent to you, but just decline that.

Then register your new card tomorrow in the App in the WeCharge > Charging Cards section.

I tried to log into the new app with the same account as I'd used on the old We Connect version, which had my eGolf registered to it. The new app saw the car on my account but got stuck in a loop & went around in circles with various signup screens. I had to give up in the end & register a new account. I've seen a couple of posts from others who had similar experiences, so I'd advise caution with signing up for the We Charge before successfully adding the ID.3.

It’s what I did, in common with lots of other e-Golf owners who wanted to use the WeConnectID App so that they could view percentage charge of the battery, and it went fine.

Adding the ID.3 afterwards was ok as well, maybe you experienced a period when the App backend was playing up, which is frequently!

As roadhawk says we now have until the end of March to register the card. The 12 month period to use up your £500 credit starts from the date of registration, so I'm holding off until the last minute. I don't expect to be going any significant distances over the next couple of months, and more charging stations are being added (slowly!) with time, so I'm expecting to get better use out of the credit later rather than sooner.

I’m now trying to charge exclusively at a local Osprey just to burn through my credit, I managed to do £44 in December according to the statement they emailed me last night, I should get through most of the £500 by October.

I considered doing that, but there's currently only one Engenie charger close to me, which is in a carvery pub car park. At the moment, the pub is closed due to Covid (until further notice) and they have barriers on the car park. I don't know if they put up the barriers all the time when it's closed, or just for now. The next nearest We Charge supported fast charger is 30 miles away...

When I asked about the charge card and the free credit the 'EV specialist' said that was only for 1st movers, those who had pre-ordered the car.
So I didn't get anything, no freebies, not even a USB cable.

Like Tooks I already have the new we connect ID app with my Golf registered on it abs I was able to add the ID3 to it last night.

While I was waiting for my mats I registered for the card, added my credit card details but still couldn't see any difference.
I've just looked again and went to Plan Overview then View Plan Upgrade Options and I can upgrade to we Charge Plus with the £500 credit.

Ah yes, sorry, forgot to mention that last step! 😂

Glad you’re sorted now then, you just need a physical RFID card?

I didn’t get offered the RFID card, but the dealer did give me a USB C to iPhone cable.

With my Life I got VW presentation box with the We Connect card on the top. Underneath were a multiconector cable, a pair of ID socks, a microfibre cloth in a nice pouch and a packet of wildflower seeds with VW branding.

Sublime to the ridiculous or what?
