And what do you think the major changes will be (if any)!
Will they wait until solid state batteries are available??

Unless it changes with EVs, most manufacturers are on a 6-7 year life cycle, with a mid life refresh.

On that basis I wouldn’t expect any significant changes until the 2023 model year. But, I’m guessing just like everybody else really!

What would I like to see?

Some kind of ‘sport’ version, with better seats. A performance hike for the cooking models would be good, or at least the option for a bit more if you’re not that bothered about efficiency/max miles per kWh.

An all wheel drive version would be good too, but technically more challenging in the ID.3, although I’m sure it wouldn’t take much to accommodate it. I hope they do, and even if my next car isn’t an ID.3 or even a VW, I don’t think you should have to get an SUV to get the benefits of AWD.

I would expect the facelift to come out mid 2024 and the MKII around 2028.

What can they add? I would expect to see some of the following added:

True lane assist (where is steers itself around a bend).
Electric hatch with the 'virtual pedal' hands free opening/closing.
AWD
A performance version
Memory seats
Driver profiles
Heated rear seats
DCC
Park Assist
Leather interior

The better seats seem available in some markets already - they are much sportier with integrated headrests. As far as I can tell, they are the same seats that come with the ID4 Max.

Could be a good retrofit item then?

I think they already have this on the higher spec models, Travel Assist it’s called?

It’s more than the basic Lane Assist.

From todays experience it's far from good enough to steer around a corner, it will (just about) nudge you between the white lines (on a motorway).
Surely the major upgrade will be interior quality including plastics, seats and infotainment/interfaces? I’d be surprised if they wait more than a couple of years to sort these out as they’re the key things putting people off.

I doubt they will use 'better quality plastics' as most manufacturers of EVs are now leaning more towards recycled plastics and materials to be used inside the car, the plastics VW use are also far superior to the hard scratchy plastic used in a Leaf for example, the only gripe I have with the plastics in the ID.3 is they do mark very easily.

I will be glad however when the current trend for 'piano black' plastic dies a death!

Do you have Travel Assist on your car then, or just the normal Lane Assist?

They’re quite different beasts, there’s an ID.4 demo on YT somewhere that demonstrates the difference.

Honestly, I don’t think there’s much difference between the interior quality of the ID.3 and our M3 LR?

The seats look nice in the M3, but I find them quite small. The interior plastics etc I think are very similar.

I’m not sure where this all started, maybe it was YT reviewers looking for something to talk about, and certainly I’d agree the fabric styling and colours of some configs won’t be to everybody’s taste, but it’s still a quality interior and well screwed together. No squeaks or rattles either.

I expect if it is putting some people off, it will be a non-issue to many more and even attract some compared to what VW have done before.

Emergency Assist
Illuminated door handles
Keyless entry including Start/Stop button on centre console – Proactive occupant protection
Rear-view camera
Side Assist
Travel Assist

And when do we think VW will be ready to deploy solid state battery technologies ??
2024 is being mentioned re Toyota but there has been so much spin around this it’s hard to assess if any firm plans really exist...

It looked a very capable system on the video, compared to the basic Lane Assist anyway, but the demo was on dual carriageways and junctions.

What kind of roads have you tried it on, and where would you want to use it?

It’s one of the few features I’d want on my 1st, but if it’s no good I can stop wanting it now! 🙂
Only tried it on the motorway so far, the mrs was panicking as it was almost on the hard shoulder before the car steered away from the line.

On my 2015 Škoda Superb it was a pretty amazing bit of kit and would keep you in the middle of the lane, so I had high hopes of it being just as useful on the Tour, currently it isn't.

Not sure they'll upgrade the door cards- everything VW has had a downgrade lately. Not sure if they're experimenting how low they can go and be tolerated, or whether they were stepping on Audis toes too much. The Golf 8 is a little worse than 7.5, Polo 6 door cards are very cheap, T-Roc is a real showcase of cheapness...

The door cards on the ID3 aren't too bad - plastics are harder than Golf 8 but softer than Polo 6, or at least less hard looking, less glossy and more matt on the finish.

The seats do look cheap to me, having owned a string of performance VWs, but if I'd been used to driving Golf S instead of Golf R, the difference wouldn't have seemed so big visually (they still felt comfy on my test drive). I think we've got to remember that the ID3 isn't a performance model, even though it's as quick as a GTD.

I'm a little disappointed that Life got the cheaper seats and some damn ugly cloth, but given the huge price gap (thanks to the grant threshold), if I felt that strongly, I'd get a leather retrim if the ID3 looks to be a long term keeper.

I just wish the grab handles weren't piano black.

Just had my first longish trip in my Max and it did steer around bends on single carriageway A roads and motorways. I just kept light touch on the steering wheel - a bit spooky but I got used to quickly. Only works when you've pressed the travel assist button and the lane indicators turn green.

Yes, I find travel assist works very well, in all areas where road marking are clear. It does go much further than lane assist, it also starts and stops properly in queues, rather than disengage after a few seconds.

I’ve played with travel assist in a few situations, including busy motorways, each time it’s worked well. Obviously you’ve got to keep your hands on the wheel, but I’ve allowed the wheel to move itself, within my grip. It’s a slightly odd feeling, but I’d performed well, kept me well centred and haberdashery bends very well.

Its one of the bits that works well on my ID3

At the risk of diverting to a thread on interior...
We really like the interior and seats of our 1st Edition. Minimalist bright, roomy, airy. Seats comfortable on long journeys without squeezing you into a bucket seat you will never use re hard cornering etc.
Clearly the infotainment screen and light cluster need redesign and a few more switches like steering wheel heater on the actual steering wheel would be good.
Rear speakers standard also needed.
Full parking assist would be a real plus.

I do think that the lack of rear speakers is a ridiculous omission that would cost them coppers to implement but a significant amount to retrofit (hundreds). I wonder whether the cheapest option here would be for front L and front R wiring to each be spliced/split into fron/rear L and front/rear R if you're not wanting to have front L and R blasting. Surmising it would require no coding doing it that way.
