Does anyone know what the thinking is behind the 'feature' of the engine starting when the bonnet is opened with the car powered up? I can't think of any useful reason for this.
Because it could start at any time.
You could put your hands in thinking it was safe, the engine could suddenly start up and you could get pinched. So they run the engine all the time the bonnet is up
