An interesting idea - the Tesla Gigafactory, with its capacity to make far more batteries than necessary, is their way of continuing to make money off their cars. You keep the car for decades and the minimal amount of money they make from servicing is compensated for by buying new batteries off them every eight years or so.

I don't think Tesla the car company is the endgame. Tesla the Electrical Storage company which numbers cars among it's various product lines is much more interesting.

What this article seems to miss is that Tesla are not just going to continue selling the Model S, they are hoping the Model E will compete with cars like the Ford Focus which sell a million or so cars a year. They also expect other manufacturers to buy Tesla batteries. Maybe they will need a second factory... oh... looks like they thought of that too!
