Wifi issues in new Tesla

5533 Views 18 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Luke Henley
I've just received my new Tesla Model Y and cannot connect to wifi.

When I try and connect, it searches for networks but doesn't find any. My phone however does connect to my home wifi so the Tesla should be within reach (it is parked on my drive). But even then, it's not just that it doesn't find my home network, it doesn't find any!

Just worth mentioning the following before anyone mentions them...
  1. I have tried rebooting the Tesla
  2. Wifi is definitely on, not off.
  3. I have not yet connected the car to my phone (if it makes a difference) as I'm still waiting for my lease company to transfer ownership to me or something like that.
Any ideas? Until this is sorted I'm unable to download updates, get traffic info when using sat nav, etc.

Will it connect to your phones wireless hotspot for example if you enable that?
The traffic updates is not reliant on your car being connected to WiFi as how would it get updates on a journey. It uses the cars sim for that which you'll need premium connectivity after the initial month expires.

Have you tried sitting in the car, creating a hotspot with your phone and seeing if it'll find that and connect, just to test it?
How do you park in relation to your router?

I'm fairly certain the wifi antenna in the car is in the passenger door mirror. When I got my Model 3 I had to get a mesh network setup and put one of the discs in the front window of my house so the car would connect.

I've just tried it and yes it does work! So it could just be the signal then. My phone picks up my home wifi and other wifi networks within the radius but my car doesn't so guess it just means my phone signal is much stronger.

Ahh interesting. I park driver side closest to the house, so your theory may be valid as my passenger side is further away.

Yes good point about traffic updates. Yes the car does connect to mobile hotspot so seems it is just a range issue.

Regarding premium connectivity, I have a few questions if you don't mind..
  1. I don't currently have my Tesla synced up to the app, let alone the one month premium connectivity trial. My lease company told me I should get the car added to my app account within 48 days of receiving the car, you reckon I will get the premium connectivity with this?
  2. Once I do get premium connectivity, will I ever need wifi? Or will everything be done through the car's sim? E.g. updates, video streaming, etc (If so, I don't need to bother with buying range-extenders/mesh networks just so the car can connect to wifi)

Yeah, that's how I park also.

2. You still need a WiFi connection for over the air updates unfortunately. But if you can get a hot spot connection with your mobile phone then that's an option.

Yes you'll get premium connectivity for the first month for free, even a lease.

You can extend it in the app.

FWIW my Leased model 3 had premium connectivity for a year before losing it, was only supposed to be 1 month.
I do not subscribe to it now.

That loophole was fixed by Tesla this year.

Ok thanks for confirming.

Yes that's a good point, although I do have a wifi extender currently used in the house. I will move it to the front just to see if that works, and then just get another plug

I've done a bit of research and you are right about it being on the passenger side for both 3 and Y.

This is also interesting...

"The WiFi antenna on the Model Y is hidden inside the passenger side mirror. As it is surrounded by metals, the WiFi connection on the Model Y is not strong.

Unless there’s a dedicated WiFi router in the garage where you parked your Tesla, your Model Y will have difficulty getting a strong WiFi signal.

Garage doors, walls, and other obstructions will weaken the WiFi signal. On top of that, as the Model Y WiFi Antenna performs poorly due to being hidden in the passenger-side mirror, your car’s WiFi will show connectivity issues."

Out of interest, why didn't you renew it?

Every Tesla owner I've spoken to swear by it
I just do not think i need it, i can use wifi on move if i want to stream music on the dedicated players but normally just use Spotify on my phone and audio in car as bluetooth source.
Not worried about sat view maps or live traffic.
Not had is since last Sept and not needed it once.

Yeh fair play, that makes sense.

I agree with you regarding connecting to your phone via bluetooth for spotify things like that. For things like that and other apps that require streaming, i'm not too fussed either way. Nice to have but on their own not enough reason to pay £10/month

The primary reason for me to get it would be the live traffic updates. I currently use google maps on my phone am reliant on it every time I drive. Even in my local areas when I know the route inside out I always put it on just to get an accurate ETA. Whilst I can still do this on my phone, it seems pointless having a big screen with a map and not use it.

Also another benefit of using the Tesla sat nav is that it will include superchargers if I need to charge.

Fair points, for reference the Supercharger info still works for me.
Before I got the car I put a wifi analyser app on my phone - there are several to choose from for Android but I don't know about Apple - and used it to work out that there was miminal signal where the car was going to sit - even though it is quite close to the router the signal wasn't getting through the walls. I use Google Wifi units so got another one (cheap on eBay) and put in the window nearest the car, and that solved the problem for me. If I had a garage I'd likely have used an extender.
