Hi guys...

I had the option about 5 years ago to install a 22kwh charger at home and at the time I wanted to but the £2k cost to upgrade to 3 phase wasn't in my reach but having a car that could do 22 at home and up to 43kwh! would have been great at home..

I read that the 43kwh at home was made illegal by eu a long time ago. And uk have not changed this.

Anyway I am now reconsider as I?3 wish I had done it back then

The costs probably increased but i cant seem to find a company that advertise installing 22kwh at home

I know bp pulse did when I had my standard 7.4kwh installed.
Any body know or have had themselves

A 22kW capable chargepoint is simply one with a 3 phase contactor in it. Some do like the Zappi, so it's a case of getting 3phase installed and a 3 phase smart meter if you wish to use a smart tariff.

Search for 22kW ac home charges on the usual suspect to find them.

An actual 22kW charger is an expensive DC rapid charger. Though it looks like some may be available as V2H and V2G chargers.

So I got 2 zoe's and another car which does do 11 and still has the option to turn it into a 22 ac

My reason is something I just want to charge but want it at home prices. (sometimes free)

In my mind I only want 22 cars going forward.

I should have done it when I was offered it.

2 lot of sites come up paying 22KWh chargers but when you go into it it reads 7.4 and they even email you a quote which doesn't give the option.... Maybe I need to ring a few of them up as I think it's not standard.
And like you guys pointed out most cars only have a 3 6. Like the leaf Or 7.4 charger for most

Almost no cars are going to support 22kW AC going forward.

You would be better off getting a 12 or 24kw DC charger. Which have come rapidly down in price.

There have been some pretty bad mistakes with 22kW AC chargers, the original 3 phase zappi comes to mind with how it handled a dropped phase on VW for instance. 😂. Thankfully now resolved.

Back on the day you could have your charger stamped "Zoe ready" if you met our criteria for stopping your neighbours blender singing due to the harmonics you were shoving into the grid. Good times.

"En cas de bruit émis par les appareils domestiques pendant la charge, l'installateur devra ajouter un filtre 10 kHz 50 dB en amont de la borne de charge pour prévenir l'excitation de l'installation électrique domestique."

Project EV 22kw range 22kW Range - Project EV

I doubt the EU banned 43kW home charges - just there is no demand.
AFAIK there was only one car that could take advantage of it and is no longer in production. Would need 64A per phase. And I've only see it available as an option on 50kW DC rapids where the power supply would already be in place.

Sorry you missed read.. It wasn't banned to make them chargers or cars it was banned to have residential homes.. And areas..
You can have more via dc because it's stored

And the reason you see them 43 is because then areas such as hotels and pubs were not residential

Car makers can put in but why when you can by pass the conversation and go direct dc to dc

Although I wished it different. Who knows maybe we can store enough batteries to do dc 50+ in our homes.

Anyway I will make some calls this week and update on this project

The zappi seems like it's own issues

Basically I'm always charging day or night.. And I feel I got two options.. Get 3 tesla batteries but it's still going to be slow.. But cheaper but investment will be like 18k+

Or
Upgrade for £2k plus charger of £1k
And gets faster charging but more expensive

It just seems the more financial viable thing

I worked out I'd save about £1500 by not going to the local 22kwh charger a year
Being grid and podpoints. Bp is too far away.

I guess this would only be a thought if you had a car that could do 22 really.. As 11 is not worth it...
1.5 x faster or 3 x faster...
I only want to charge to 80% anyway

Looks like the new Renault 5 is going to be ac 22kWh.

I think they just all be 22 in cars and if you have a 7 at home that's fine but
Limiting what's available means the demand can't grow for it..

In the usa because then are on a lower voltage their charge time is often double of that a uk 240v

I know it's not as simple as just voltage. But if you check tesla uk and usa charge calculator the usa models from home take twice as long

Given we have lots of public 22kw ac chargers here in France having a car with the facility is definitely useful. My EQE has it and I anticipate the GLC will too and I will pay extra if required as I consider it very handy.
Agree with @Rbrian fir home use not really needed we decided it was not worth the 1250 euros needed to upgrade to tri phase.
Mercedes branded charger can deliver 22kw.

The Tesla wall charger supports 32a/3 phase so 22kw charging and is used in various semi commercial settings like that, £400 from ebay and lots around as many buy the with referral credit to flip them for cash, including me You’d need a 3 phase supply and a sparky to install, it might also need DNO approval, but otherwise easy.

Interesting conversation I had with one the the companies that advertise they do 22kw home chargers. They called me up to explain and check if I did indeed want a 3 phase
And in that conversation they stated it's been picking up and they expect that a lot of homes will be doing it more and in the next 20 to 50 years people will want phase 3 and the load and demand is changing...

Well great sales talk right...

I decided to see what ai had to say about it...

And what he said wasn't far from what ai repeated

Here is the link for them interested

So maybe I can get in early with the 3 phase.. They have yet to give me a price but they expect it to be between 2 to 5 k just to get the supply

Thought I'd share
