32A Blue Commando Adapter for Tesla Model S/X/3 Gen 2 UMC

Currently I'm using the Gen 1 UMC with the 32A blue adapter to charging my Model S at home, I can get 7.4 kw/ 22 miles/hour.

I ordered the model 3, and as I know, all Model S/X/3 now comes with the Gen 2 UMC, which only provide the 16A blue adapter. Therefore, I purchased this 32A adapter from US, but no reviews for this adapter.

Does anybody knows will it works with Gen 2 to get 32A single phase 7.4kw charging rate. or the gen 2 cable limited to 16A even use the 32A adapter?

Many thanks.

This suggests UMC2 is 16Amp max

The Gen2 UMC is able to do 32A single phase, and Tesla UK apparently now have stock of a 32A commando pigtail for it. It's about ÂŁ30.

The car is supplied with the 3 pin 10A, and 16A commando, pigtails, hence that's what it says on the charging support page linked above.

There is only one worldwide UMC design these days (and the same unit is supplied with M3, MS and MX) - hence it's a single phase unit. The Gen1 UMC is end of life and cannot be ordered any more, but I believe adaptors for it are still available.

Just had a 32amp commando socket installed for occasional use here and purchased the 32amp commando pigtale from the tesla shop, waiting for delivery. The socket was ÂŁ200 installed, which included RCD and a 2m earth rod. The electrician also put in cable that had a data line in so that it could easily be upgraded to a proper EV charging unit in future if I choose to do. Dont plan to use it regularly as my company will not pay for my home electricity but will pay for public chargers, very annoying!

Hi I have just ordered a model 3 and am really confused by the UMC 16a or 32a.... so if I am following you correctly all i have to do is put a 32a commando socket at home and get a 32a adapter from tesla for ÂŁ30 I am able to charge at 7kw?

Sorry this is my first EV.....

If you have a Model 3, a 32A commando socket, and you buy the 32A commando pigtail for your Gen2 UMC from Tesla, then yes you will have everything you need to charge your car at 7kW.

It is worth noting though that if you install any kind of electrical outlet (normal 3 pin socket, 16A or 32A commando, Type 2 point) whose intended use is EV charging, then you need to comply with all of the special wiring regulations such as fitting a DC sensitive RCD, asking permission from the DNO, earth rod considerations etc etc. The commando socket route is therefore not necessarily the cheap, quick route it might appear.

I would always recommend getting a proper Type 2 outlet installed, and keeping the UMC in the boot for occasional use while travelling, which is what it's really for.

So on this note, a quick question.
I am planning a road trip into Europe some time late September. Now the hotel I am staying at does not have a dedicated charger in their car park but may have a simple plug. Where could I pick up the Schuko adapter for the Tesla UMC? Would be nice to get some extra miles overnight even if it's not many, also would prevent losing any while it's stationary in the car park.
Cheers

Cool, I'll order it when the M3 eventually gets here and I go to pick it up. Fingers crossed it arrives before the trip otherwise we are in a Kona EV. Still no hardship but really wanted to give the M3 a nice long road trip.
Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

If by reversible you mean reverse the live and neutral wires, this is no longer necessary in Gen 2 UMC, it will cope with either polarity or even the odd supply you sometimes find in Belgium, Spain and some others where both lines are live and derived from 127volts 2 phases out of 3 phase giving 230 volts line-line but both live. ( basically its the old 120 volt supply but they tweaked it to give 230 volts line-line instead of replacing all the transformers) I have tested the Gen 2 UMC on one of these supplys and confirm it works whereas the old gen1 UMC would not in either polarity.( I use polarity loosely , meaning live-neutral reversal)

Would any of these adapters be suitable.

I also saw this neat EVSE on Bjorn’s YouTube channel it plugs directly into a red 5-pin commando and the EVSE is integrated into the type 2 handle.
Expensive and not sure how compliant is it as I’m sure the EVSE components are supposed be only a short distance from the source socket hence the design of most EVSEs. Can any experts comment on this?

edit: sorry cross posted but sort of relevant so I leave up.
