I have have this issue in my 2015 i3 range extender.

Have a post on here saying Don't buy i3 .

For a year nearly every 4 weeks my car was getting repaired from BMW, I bought it used from a dealer and it came with extended warranty.

The EME unit was the last straw at the time I though they said REME unit to me at the time .

They had the car nearly 2 weeks.

Every time I went to the dealership when it went It for something else instated now concerned I was with the new fault.

Eventually come to near end of the one year used warranty BMW finally agreed to extended the warranty for further year.

That moment I had it up for sale.

The guy who bought it said while he was baffling with price said he did not care about the warranty . I wonder how many time her used it during the the year.

The strange thing I went out and bought 2016 newer model i3 range extender 94ah. As I liked the car so much.

Got it with 33k about to turn 80k I have had no issues until now...
something seems strange with steering need to get looked at. Hopefully not too huge

I feel the pain lady who possibly on the hook for the repairs.

Hope you have positive as possible outcome.

When I bought my 2015 BMWi3 it had been a test car only from Cooper Thames Ditton dealership and it only had 3,500 miles on the clock. It was just over a year old. It is absolutely rotten having this EME problem and I have no idea when I will get it back, nor what it will cost in the end by the time the dealership discuss the factory recall with BMW Germany. It was in for a factory recall relating to charging

Have you seen this thread: Intermittent steering fault, specifically this bit which is 'cured' by a software upgrade:

MODEL
I01 (i3)

SITUATION
The driver notices a reduction of steering assistance sporadically while in certain driving situations. Steering
control is never lost when the reduction of assistance occurs.

The fault may self-correct for no obvious reason or be eliminated with a terminal change/key cycle.

There is no Check Control (CC) message when the issue occurs.

CAUSE
Unfavorable software in the Electric Power Steering (EPS).

BUT what is the range for the EVs? I had petrol for peace of mind with my BMWi3. I go regularly to Cambridge (65 miles) and Suffolk (100 miles) to see my sons and the grandchildren. I can charge at both addresses for the return journey

Renault Zoe Z.E. 50 Advertised 230-240 miles. Winter worst case 140 miles?
Peugeot e208 Advertised 217. Winter worst case 120 miles?
2020 BMW i3 - Advertised 183 miles - Winter worst case 130-140 miles ?
Seat Mii electric Advertised 160 miles - ??
Mazda MX-30 Advertised 124 miles - ??

Vauxhall eCorsa and Peugeot e208 are the same car with different styling.

The MX-30 is meant to be a city car. It will not manage 100 miles at 70mph on a single charge. It probalby will at 60mph in good weather.

It is absolutely horrifying that even cars from 2018 and 2019 should have this massive problem of the EME.
This is different than the early EME, where many of them fail.

The 2018-19 recall was caused by a faulty component inside the EME. BMW spotted this one early and recalled 3 month's production. All the cars got a new module for free.

My October 2018 i3s was not recalled. So far it has been trouble free.

Mechanics need to remove the entire drive unit to replace the EME. That is a poor design. Modules should be easy to change.

In 5 years EVs have come on a lot. If you have destination charging in both places than just about any one (except Honda E or Mini) would do it without charging along the way.

There was a good car wow episode on running a set of newer smaller EVs until they were flat.

No - these small cars are not for me. I do the occasional longer trip so need more range. That's why I loved my BMWi3, until now.....

You can currently get a new Ioniq Electric Premium on a 24 month personal lease for £199/month. Real world winter range of 150 miles and with all the electronic gizmos. If I didn’t have a Kona I would be very tempted with that.

The current i3 has twice the battery range of yours. Zoe has even more.
One person said on this forum that I should steer clear of Renault Zoe as it not is reliable. It may well be that it is imperative (= good advice) to have warranty on electric cars as repairs can easily become extremely expensive. My feeling at the moment as I consider all of my options.

The main problem with any Renault is the uneven dealer network. Zoe is a pretty good car. If it does break some of the dealers are terrible.
Thank you Andrew. Really useful info. The range is impressive, but reliability would be a a big problem for me. I hate to get nervous about these issues after my BMW problem. Never been so nervous, but electric battery only is a real worry. Seems that you have to research the dealership also locally .... I'm in London, but not the posh parts

Hyundai and Kia are your friends then! Fantastic quality, perfect execution of EV tech and peerless warranties.

Maybe not perfect but they put their warranty out there, no else matching it.
Hyundai cars sound like the best to me, with a good range also. Warranty and reliability must really be top priority for a lady owner when it comes to EV cars. I drive on my own, just with my dog, and it is not funny breaking down. Sad that BMW fail us when they have had such a good quality image for decades .... The Germans also cheated on emission standards. We always believed in German quality .....

However, I no longer need a family car and would really prefer a smaller car so I am back to asking what is the best choice now to replace the size of BMWi3 which is so compact and also nippy in London traffic. What is the best and most reliable small car that will comfortably take me on the occasional longer journey with a driving range exceeding maybe 120-150 miles. Not so simple ....

Kia Soul EV 64kwh It's compact in length, reasonably quick but will do 200+ miles per charge all year round. 7 year warranty.

The first editions are missing front parking sensors but they're just starting to snick under £30k now.

Must look them up now in my search. I only remember Kia as a small un-interesting little car, but Kia has changed a lot since then it seems
