buying new cars from the UK

Hey Guys,

I'm thinking of importing a brand new car from the UK. Over here where I'm from, we never pay the listed selling price but we have to haggle, sometimes we even manage to lower the price by 2K-3K (the listed price is obviously way inflated). Does it work the same way in the UK or the listed price is what you pay? Any discounts for paying cash?

Cheers.

It depends on the car, and current circumstances. On the outgoing Leaf your can get a good price, as they want to clear stocks for the new model, and also the outgoing model is now understandably in less demand.
If you want an Ioniq, you have really no chance of forcing a discount, because they can't supply demand, and waiting lists are now months long.

Never pay list price, no matter how new the car is! Just play a few dealers against each other - they'll very quickly lower prices (though I found if you tell them of each others quotes, they'll just beat each other by a small amount - if you tell them "I'm just going with the lowest quote I have by next week" you'll tend to get better results!).

As for discounts for cash - usually not. The "selling price" is often lower for finance packages because dealers are incentivised to sell them (because despite the cheaper selling price, with interest payments you end up paying more).

But as mentioned above - IONIQs are on ridiculous lead times, you probably want something else (I ended up ordering an e-Golf) though the new Leaf looks decent too.

You don’t say what country you are in but be careful as you will probably have import fees or VAT to add to the price not to mention registration, this may end up costing more than you have saved?

I can get ÂŁ2,195 off the RRP of an Ioniq Premium SE (ÂŁ25,415 after the government grant)

Thanks a lot guys for all your replies.

I ended up ordering one locally from Malta. Currently our government has a real good scheme where we don't pay any registration tax on ev cars plus we get 8000eur when scrapping our old vehicles, basically I'm saving around 12K on the Ioniq.

If I had to get one from the UK, I would have had to pay VAT and around 1K in shipping fees on top of the price I pay for the car.
