I've finally got my EV charging point due to be fitted next month, and in preparation have been trying to get my existing 80A main fuse upgraded to 100A.
My first attempt was asking the smart meter installer, who said he would have happily done it then if he'd had a fuse with him
Second attempt was when I had to get the DNO (Scottish Power) round to check some damage the meter installer had done for safety. I had been hoping he'd be able to do it there and then, but he had to check what the admin process was and said I needed to apply through the SP website.
Third attempt - applied through the SP website. After a couple of days, spoke to someone on the phone to confirm that despite all the stuff I'd had to fill in on their online form, all I needed was the fuse swapping as the tails had been confirmed to be suitable and the supply was also expected to be fine (13 year old house), so they said they'd quote me. Just received their quote... ÂŁ200! The quote breaks down to "Low Voltage Cut-Out: ÂŁ91.97" and "Project Management (Total Labour): ÂŁ105.61".
WTF? I though other people had got this done for free? What even is a low voltage cut-out, won't I already have one, and why do I suddenly need a new one? And how long (and how much 'project management') does it take to change a fuse?
Am I going about this the wrong way?
