e-208 traction fault

This is common for Stellantis EVs. You can probably fix it yourself by disconnecting the 12v battery, using the quick release (no tools required), leave it a minute, reconnect, then wait 20 minutes for it to reboot. There's a recall out - if yours hasn't been done, contact your nearest dealer, it's free.

What actually causes this fault normally in Stellantis cars? Is it normally a side effect of the air conditioning unit failing (as described by the recall) or are there other causes as well?

OP - in case you are unaware, there is a safety recall on e208s to update the engine management system (ie a software upgrade) so you should probably check with Peugeot whether it's been done if this is news to you.
I think it's overzealous safety. I've only seen it once, at a DC rapid charger. It stopped at 80%, I wanted a little more so I plugged in again, and it stopped again. Then I saw the error. I decided to move it so it wasn't blocking the charger, and it drove just fine, so I went back to my hotel. That's when I Googled it and discovered the 12v quick release, which fixed it.

There wasn't actually a problem at all, but the monitoring system thought there was, likely because it was hot (mid summer in the South of England). The update adds some leeway, so it doesn't panic so easily. I'm making these numbers up, for illustration purposes.
Normal working temperature 0-50⁰. Rapid charging, it reached 51⁰, panic stations!!
Danger zone 80⁰. New update, don't panic until 70⁰. Rapid charging, it reached 51⁰... carry on, nothing's wrong.
