You can change the recuperation level from Low to automatic or to high. If you knew this already sorry

 

I had an early GTE, and in GTE mode car battery isn't just charged through braking recuperation, it directly takes energy from the ICE to do it.

I haven't seen the latest GTE, but maybe now when it displays 'recuperation' it's showing literally just the energy recovered from braking. Alternatively, they've changed the algorithm.

Aggressive recuperation as used in 'one pedal driving' setups don't lead to greater efficiency by the way.

 

It might not be more efficient in the VW but it is in the Leaf, although I only tend to use it in heavy traffic.

 

You will not recuperate more than a few miles using regen braking, it's just physics, unless going downhill all of the energy came from the battery or fuel source anyway.
