I like the way that they have spun this to pretend that it's being done for our safety.

Like this quote. "The primary function of the DNO fuse is to disconnect the premises in the event of a fault occurring between the DNO and customers equipment. The DNO fuse should not be used as a method for limiting the electricity capacity within a customer’s installation."

Unknown to me, apparently this fuse is really to protect me from some error that they might create, rather than the other way around. Ah, so that's OK then. Nothing whatsoever to do with limiting total demand on any one sub-station - rather than upgrading that equipment to cope with what will pretty soon be a much larger demand.

All good. Nothing to see here. Move along >>>>>>>>

I can't see the need to ever need more than the current 60A I'm allocated.
This is the point that doesn't sit easily with me about this decree to limit houses to 80amp. The impression we have is that we are 'allocated' power based on what is available from the nearest sub-station and cable sizes. And that asking for more, based on our own desire to increase equipment in the house was only granted if calculations showed that need.

But they now claim that the company fuse is really there to protect the house from the DNO in some way.

Quote - "The primary function of the DNO fuse is to disconnect the premises in the event of a fault occurring between the DNO and customers equipment "

They say that it's there to disconnect the premises in the event of a fault at their end. Not to protect the DNO cable and substation from being overloaded by the premises.

This smacks to me of them using a low fuse to limit the overall power availability to all premises drawing from that substation and they use the excuse of 'protecting us' to do that.

However, if the substation and supply cables were to be upgraded to be capable of supplying more power to that total dependency, then fitting a 100 amp fuse to all the premises would have the same effect. But then be capable of handling the situation when they all want heat pumps, two EVs per house, electric cooking, and power showers as they remove their gas supply. As such it can be interpreted as a kicking the can down the road measure rather than some altruistic move to protect us.

Many countries already charge higher standing charges for higher levels of power supplied. This chart shows the French EDF scale.
