Good morning, I'm new to the EV world and we are looking for our first EV.

Let's start with the budget its £16k so used

Needs to be a family car, 3 kids, only one car seat now which expect them to be out within 3 years max he's a giant! Other kids are 11 and 13.

Mileage we go maybe 6k a year nothing massive at all.

We will be getting a home charger.

My thoughts from initially looking are and in no order ideally looking at about 40k on the clock and other than the Tesla they are about 4 years old. Thisnis based on my googling

Skoda Enyaq
Hyundai ioniq 5
VW ID 4
Tesla S

Any suggestions and things to note would be ideal.

Welcome to the pleasure of the EV world.
I would add to your list Kia Niro as well. Tesla S is great car but.....let's be honest here, it is getting old as a car and technology. VW ID4 is not in production anymore but don't this put you off. Under the fancy clothing is the same car as many other from the VW group. You can find some great bargains around. 6k a year is not a lot, so I will make sure that first and foremost the car you are looking at have 100% service history. Especially with the Korean, they will invalidate warranty if the car is not on schedule.
There are a lot of members here with Hyundai's and Kia's that will chime in to give you more detailed advice.

I would ignore your "x Miles per year" and work out your average miles per day.
Then also include any fairly regular long trips you make as outliers (not included in your daily average).
You will save FAR more by getting a car with a battery that suits your usage than buying a more expensive car with a larger battery "just in case".

For example I drive about 40 miles a day, but have a regular trip once every 3-4months where I'll do 110 miles each way (with a stop when I get there).

So when I look at cars I need something that can do 150 real world (Winter, rain, motorway speed) but most importantly that it can rapid charge at 100-150kw to quickly recharge it ready for my return trip.
I could get something with 250 real world range, but I'll only use the full legs of the battery 3-4 times a year... And that larger battery car will cost me a few thousand more.
Where as the total spend each year of 4-8 rapid charges will be a couple hundred worst case.

It can sometimes be helpful to know what your current car is and what you like and don't like about it. Might allow folk to say x is better/worse/bigger/smaller in comparison.

we currently have a C4 picasso, we had 3 kids in car seats so it needed to be big. Now my eldest is a slim 13 year old and my boys 11 and my youngest is 5 and tall.
the space is nice, the boots good the rest of itis just meh. We are not really car people but want something to last us 6 yearsish means we can pass it on to a child at some point or they share!

Hi, you need to add the MG5 to your list:)

With £16K you have a lot of choice of good cars. I think buying cars is now like house, you keep looking until the best one jumps out at you. People prioritise different things eg we like narrow cars for parking and comfortable seats.

Out of your list i would go for the Skoda but the others are good cars, You could consider MG 5 which have proven themselves.

Dont underate space with teenagers as everything else grows with them.

Best time to buy a car is nearer to end of year.
Dont chase the battery size as i suspect all the modern EVs will do your job.

Enyaq, ID4 and Ioniq 5 are all good choices. Kia EV6 is another good option. To some extent preferences between these come down to styling although the EV6 boot is a slightly less practical shape than the rest. I would recommend test driving or at least viewing all of them.

The Enyaq and EV6 seem to hold their value slightly better, so are not so cheap for similar spec and mileage as the ID4 and Ioniq 5. For the above reasons the choice for me 18 months ago came down to a used ID4 or Ioniq 5. We ultimately went for the ID4 because VW had better finance options on approved used cars at the time and because I was concerned about the prevalence of ICCU failures in Ioniq 5s and EV6s (you should definitely research these before buying).
In terms of used values the exception to what I said above is the Enyaq 60, which can be found very cheap. If you aren't doing regular long distance and don't want a high spec car then those are worth a good look.

I have no experience with Model S but they will obviously be older. Look up Rich Symons' YouTube buying guide.

Is the MG4 large enough for 2x teens and a booster seat in the back?
Might be, but always seems a bit tight in the back when I sat in one..

Tesla S -
Sensible family car..
The others look like a good bet though!

MG5 Trophy (estate)?
Renault Megane E-tech?
Citroen e-C4?
MG ZS?
You're nearly in the budget for the lower end of the MGS5 range, but maybe only on PCP/lease?

Depends on how long OP is planning to keep the car I guess..

From your choices, and bearing in mind that you need 3 big 'uns in the back then the Enyaq or the Ioniq 5 would suit you nicely. If you can, go for the larger battery versions even if you don't need it a lot you will appreciate it when you do.

TBH wife was shopping for a car ~£16k cash and in many senses it's an awkward price bracket. On one hand it can get you into something reasonably new but also older higher spec with no warranty. Shopping locally means higher prices than taking a punt ordering a car unseen which gives you a much smaller pool to choose from. Also hardly any EVs in the big name dealers mostly MG5's, Zoe's and ID3's. Quite rare to find much else. Anyway she went for a VW with haptic buttons, argh! Lol!
