After last update my son did. That crippled the car and it was on a tow truck and off to be next day, we are not doing it. He is selling the dam car as we had nothing but issues in the year we owned it. Yes it drives nice but 5 month argument with vw over faulty infotainment unit , faulty climate control , heated seats come on at will. Folding mirrors stuck folded in. And last issue charging flap refused to shut. A solinaid gave up. we are going for a Kia now

 

I haven't heard of any cars having significant problems with this one, for what it's worth.
In your situation, you probably do just need to wait. One thing to try is next time you get in, allow it plenty of time to boot up so everything in the infotainment is fully loaded before you press the brake. Drive for at least 5-10 minutes and pull up where you would want the car to be for the update. This might help.

 

Definitely only start the update when you don't need the car for a couple of hours.

 

Just finished my update to 3.8 30 mins ago, all worked except I now have an error with the sos system. From what I've read seems to be fairly common (23% from one poll I've seen), anyone know anything about the cause of this yet? I'll leave the car for an hour and check again etc but not expecting it to fix itself.

 

I don't know, but I asked the same question on the ID driver's club group and someone said "I don’t think anything is actually wrong with the module. I pressed the SOS button and the light briefly turned green and called emergency services just like it should." Which is interesting. This does seem to be happening a lot.

Someone on there pointed out part of the update is supposed to be preparing the car for 2g/3g switch off. So it must be changing the software in the comms module in some way and maybe some of them don't like it.

 

I am on 3.7 no sign of 3.8.

Two days ago, I received a small update, that took only about 5 minutes to install.

It corrected two software errors, so that could happen with the SOS button.

 

This update likely patches a CVE that was discovered recently. It is one that could allow a user connected to the Wi-Fi network of the car to gain root access to the infotainment system. I would personally not install the update if something like that interests you as I believe it cannot be exploited without knowing the car's Wi-Fi password but could be useful for exploring improvements to the vehicle's software by third parties.

 

There is a growing rumour that the SOS failure is due to the backup battery in the comms unit.

“just to let you know this error is Backup battery related. OCU (telematics, SOS) module has own small backup battery in the Control unit, after the update i dont know why but it will reset SoH of this battery, and because it was updating, this battery could be down a bit, after update it will safe curent SOH of this battery, and if it is below 70% error will appear, the fix is relativly easy, just reset the backup battery SoH via ODIS, VCDS and it will be gone”

 

Any idea if that is something anyone can do via an OBD dongle thing or a VW only fix?

 

My car was offered what I take to be v3.8 today, so after returning home I set it to install. The car advised to exit the vehicle, lock and wait 2 hours. After 2 hours I returned to the car to check to find 'install failed, contact workshop'. I have had the car since November 2020, and none of the early software updates have worked OTA - up until v3.7 all the updates were done by my dealer. v3.7 successfully updated OTA, but the car was not at my home and was at a location with a strong mobile signal. I feel that the failure with v3.8 is likely due to the poor mobile signal at my home. Is it likely that the car will try again to offer the update, or is that it and a dealer is the only option? Given that my car is almost 5 years old, and well out of warranty, might I be faced with a £150 diagnostic charge followed by £££s to perform the update? Should I even be bothered?

 

I don't know for certain but I expect it will offer it again. If it does, my recommendation would be to do it somewhere with a reliable signal and leave the car alone for at least 2.5 hours before going back to it. Good luck!

 

Personally I'd not bother installing the update unless it adds features or fixes bugs that you really wanted fixed. The current software is stable and there is always a risk of a failed update.

 

I'm on 3.8 now. Went well in my case. From what I was able to read, it moves to a new backend (for the Shop I think but maybe more) and it mentioned the 2g/3g switch off. It was pretty clear that it's an important update that everyone should get so I imagine all cars will get it, or lose functionality.

 

I’ve just updated mine to 3.8, it’s a mid refresh 2024 and was on 3.7 when I got it so this is the first OTA I’ve run. So far no signs of faults

You should be able to get 3.7 OTA, then 3.8 after that. You have to consent to ota updates on the myvolkswagen page, have you done that? If you have consented in the past, you should have received the update so might be worth contacting a dealer to ask although they might be a bit clueless. If you are already on 3.2 it's not supposed to be a dealer job.

 

I'm also still on 3.2 with all permissions granted, small update few months ago I think that was the shop update one, then another small update last week, not sure what that was for.
So updates seem to be working, just not had 3.7 or 3.8 yet

 

Put your VINs in to this website and see if it shows the update pending as a recall. If not I might be tempted to join the ID driver's club Facebook group and send them a message asking if there is any way to fix that. It isn't what the group is intended for but I have occasionally seen them try to help people like that. After that you are probably left with a dealer visit.

If I had to guess, that means that either the dealer hasn't properly finished the 3.2 update, or they haven't signed it off in the system, so the car hasn't been put in to any of the later update rounds because VW still think it is due something to do with 3.2.

Hopefully they tell the dealers soon as well, replies so far to that VW post suggest they haven't yet. I'll try my local dealer again on Monday and see what they know, not surprsing but Tuesday this week they knew nothing of any SOS/update issues.

 

Just to say my 22 Tour completed the 3.8 update with no issues.

 

Doesn't the post from VW state they will cover the check and replacement of battery if it requires changing? I guess it's only if by coincidence the SOS module itself is faulty they wuold not cover it.

I was also under the impression from discussions in the past that the SOS module was common to other VW group cars like Golfs so there may be independents out there who can replace the battery already.

 

Thanks for all your replies to my original message of 11th july. My notification eventually came up again and I successfully upgraded to v3.8 without any problems that I'm aware of. I've driven a few miles since the update and everything seems OK.
I have the ID.3 phone app, of course, and I think I'm right in saying that you can track the update in a primitive way. The app will not show your current range whilst the update is taking place (range is blank). When the range reappears on the app. the update should be complete.

 

Car just been into Parkway Northampton to have the SOS post 3.8 fault fixed. Just a software reset of the module, no battery required, all done free of charge.

 

Did the dealer know about the issue? Is there a TPI number yet?

 

I checked with them after VW posted on the owners facebook page and they didn't know, also they wouldn't proactively contact VW to find out, they said they would do their own diags on the car first then see what comes back and take it from there. When I checked the car in I added the following from the id owners club facebook page.

"TPI for the post 3.8 SOS module fix is TPI 2078716/1 (from 18/07/2025) "VW Connect: Text message to the emergency call system after updating to ID.S 3.8/ ID.S 3.6 (MOD4)" - SOS module defective - error message."

I've no idea if their systems highlighted the free fix or they needed the TPI number I supplied, I suspect the former as they definitely didn't want to do any proactively if it's outside of the normal procedure they follow.

 

Going have to do mine sooner rather than later, I've warned my local dealer! Can anyone tell me, if you get the SOS error is the car still perfectly driveable?
