Any estimate for the weight increase? The base van looks to be speced as 2163 kg so already 100kg more than the 75kWh Stellantis equiverlents.
Sorry, just noticed your message. Guess replying at 2am has a toll on my eyesight.

The new battery comes from another EV and the box is made of aluminium so should weigh ~460kg.
The original one is made of Steel and I'm sure it's > 300kg.

Hi Everyone,
For who does not know me, I specialise in modifying aka building custom battery packs for OEM EVs.
Above I posted some pictures of the current project I'm working on - VW Transporter eAbt MY2021. It'll have a 80kWh pack at the end. Now, working on reverse engineering the can bus protocol. Looks promising.

In the pictures above, I'm taking a can bus log during a charging session.

Anyone interested in a custom pack?
a little bit of a tangent but as mentioned I’d have said the main market for these vans with upgraded batts are campervans - with that in mind the e-transporter is perfect for those people looking for a smaller van, however I had been wondering about people looking at larger vans (like myself)

It occurred to me that the e-sprinter is probably the best of the bunch for this kind of upgrade as the sprinter is already a favourite for campervan conversion, but crucially for an EV they had an option to upgrade to 80kw DC and they’re now consistently dropping down below £20k - most large vans bar the etransit oddly sit at 50kw rapid if they have it at all!

I’d have thought another 50+kwh added (so total 100kwh+) and you’d have a 150+ mile motorway range and be able to go rapid 20-80% recharge in 40mins and it would be waaay cheaper than the new longer range vans coming out

So what’s the size of the new battery? I’ve done about 25k in ours and I think it’s started to show signs of wear on the drive train. I hear the hydraulic pump a lot more than it used to and now it feels a bit judery when coasting between regen and slight coast. It also kangaroos a bit from start if your not careful.

Just the new one. The old one is for backup when driving the prototype.
Cool. Thats pretty amazing. My lease is up in August this year (3 year) and so will the warranty. I'm thinking I ask VW to replace the bits in the vehicle that make it a little inconsistent so I get at least another 25k miles out of it. I could buy it off them for around £15k at the end of the lease and then see how you are getting on. Any ideas on cost of the new battery if you manage to develop and get it working?
Thanks again.

For your reference, I've just bought mine for £11500+VAT from VWFS/BCA, after it's 2 year lease with 11600 miles.

What I'd love to know, and can't find from googling, is how the larger stock battery from VW is? Is the 35kWh just half the battery pack with empty spaces for double the cells?

If that was the case, if Toomba's replacement battery went in a vehicle, then someone else could buy the original pack out of it and populate their van's battery pack too and also get 70kWh or so.
