What cable for current sensor?

I am renovating a flat, and plan to install a cable in the floor screed for any future car charger. I thought it would be sensible to install a current sense cable also, but what sort of wire?

Also, as I plan to put it in 20mm conduit alongside the power cable, should it be more heavily screened than a normal sensor cable, or do I need two conduits? Total length is about 10m.

For the sake of it you could get some screened outdoor grade cat5 and rum two of them.

Are you putting in the 6mm too some installers seem to throw a wobble if it's not SWA right up to the meter others are happy if T&E is used internally.

Maybe the conduit could be bigger and allow for the installer to pull through whatever floats their boat but I'd ore populate it anyway, whike it's easy.

Cheers Gaz,

I plan to fit a rotary switch to the bedroom wall behind where any charger would be. I would run only conduit flex from the rotary switch on the bedroom wall to the consumer unit. This is fairly easy to get in conduit below the screed, but SWA would be a job to conceal neatly.

Would cat5 be sufficiently screened to avoid inductive coupling from the supply cable though?

Depends on the type of current sensor but most current sensors are not voltage output but current output. Provided a twisted pair is used these are generally immune to anything but severe interference. You can add a shield but be aware that a shield is only very effective if grounded at both ends. A floating shield offers nearly no benefit and grounding at just one end is not great either. From what I have seen most EVSEs do not provide a ground for the shield and there is of course no way to ground the shield at the CT end unless it includes a shield pin which is tied to its casing.

Good point, the CAT5 used in all the installs I've had hasn't been shielded and has been run along with the power cable, one was a good 18 metres.

Still, it's easier to put it in than to take it out and put something else in so I always go for whatever would be optimal or better than needed.
