What’s the purpose of the WiFi option that appears when you tap the ‘pages’ icon thingy at top left of the screen? Any point or negatives in connecting to home WiFi?

I can't offer any helpful input on the subject but your commentary reminds me of the following true story I recently heard from among the wonderful, endearing contacts I have in Laos. I hope it will amuse you. It concerns a patient of a doctor friend of mine out there - I think they must share an apartment - and the email note he received from the man. I quote: "Sorry, sir, I am using your wife day and night when you are not present at home. In fact much more than you do. I confess this now becuase I am feeling very guilty. Hope you will accept my apologies".

A few minutes later the recipient got another message from the same individual, which read:

"Sorry, sir, a spelling mistake - I meant 'Wi-Fi' ".

I assume it is the same as the mercedes and it is simply internet in the car. so you subscribe to a provider in my case SFR (vodafone here) and they use the sim card installed in the car to connect the car to the mobile phone data network. Once the car has its own wi fi connection certain internet facilities like internet radio are useable and any apps installed on the car multimedia system and internet browser. Advantages over using the phone data connection is that generally speaking the car aerial is stronger and the signal more consistent. The other big advantage is it gives passengers a wi fi hotspot very handy for tablets that do not have data capability ie their own sim card. With mercedes you can only use SFR as your provider and there are various data plans meaning you can just sign up say for the holiday period if you want or like me for the full year or 50gb data whichever comes first . my phone automatically connects when in the car but even though I have a very generous phone data plan I use the car internet connection all the time as I do find the signal strength much better with the car connection. Check your car manual on how to connect and who their preferred suppliers and then you can check out their website. It is probably internetinthecar.vodafone.com have a look at their site it willexplain more. A tip once your account is set up you have to connect via the car to your account to activate it.

I believe it’s just a free (non mobile date) and quicker way of the car talking to the pug servers

if it’s sat outside your house and can connect to your house WiFi then why not

I’ve done it but can’t say I can see any tangible benefit. The app still takes forever to actually contact the car / Pug servers (suspect a 286 on a dial up modem)
