Zappi untethered/Intelligent Octopus Go/Lock Failure solved

Since changing to IOG, my untethered Zappi has often stopped charging with error #23 'Lock Failure'. MyEnergi told me to have the Zappi removed by an electrician and returned to them. They would test it and quote me a price for repair. Then they would return it and I could pay the electrician to re-install it. Fortunately I decided to persevere with it until it got too annoying.
It's now clear what the problem is. When charging, Octopus usually split the charge into 2 or 3 sessions, eg. 1am to 3am then 4.30am to 5.30am. During the 'break' Zappi disengages the locking pin then tries to relock. But the weight of the cable can move the plug slightly stopping the pin re-engaging. I have solved this by wrapping some electrical tape around the plug so that it is tighter in the socket. Myenergi said they are working on a fix to stop the pin disengaging. No idea when this is likely to happen.

How old is your Zappi, and EV? I haven’t had any problems, but I’ve only had it for two years. In time, no doubt the plug will wear in time, but I suspect the cable will fail first - either way, the fix is the same - replace the cable. Simple enough for an electrician.

I’ve only once experienced a charging failure due to the weight of the plug and cable, at an old ChargePlace Scotland 50kW charger with a chipped plug, that had likely been dropped more than once. Holding it up allowed the comms pins to connect and the charge started.

Curiously I asked Octopus the other day why they didn't show the untethered zappi in the last of chargers they will install; it was there a few months ago, it's not now, and they said they didn't know if it was coming back. Which is annoying, as I was after one. I wonder if they've removed it because they've been having problems with it...?

That might work, but the problem is that while the Zappi unlocks and re-locks, the cable is falling out. I think the best answer is for a software fix to keep the Zappi locked (seems simple to me). Second best is to make the plug tight enough not to move under gravity. I suppose the Zappi software is not intelligent enough for Intelligent Octopus Go.

My untethered zappi will have been in for 5 years come September and also on IOG and no issues with it, the cable stays permanently plugged into the zappi. I did have the locking mechanism replaced under warranty however that was before IOG was available. myenergi sent me a new locking mechanism and arranged for a local installer (not the original installer) to come and replace it.
