Any ideas here? Reading on tinternet, it seems to suggest I need to unlock the new head unit and then get something done to the SD card AND have something done so it works with my model car in the case its not a straight swap.

For reference the head unit was randomly rebooting and then one day it just shut down altogether and wont do anything, though I can see the backlight is on.

Pictures below show the new one in. The Secure message appears when there is no SD card and the other screen shows what happens when the SD from the old unit is put in. I suggest this is what is expected, however what I need to know is how do I get this sorted? The car is a 2018 plate and I am skeptical if Nissan wont give me the run around to code the new one into the car.

If it's like the old ZE0 and AZE0 Leaf, the map data SD card is DRM-tied by the supplier to the vehicle's head unit, so you can't just swap them.

On the older Leafs, the map data SD cards contain almost all the firmware for the head unit, so you can't even adjust the heating controls or listen to the radio without it. The only thing that works without it is the reversing camera.

You'll have to obtain the map data card suited to that particular head unit. Not sure if it's VIN specific. It's not cheap.

When I bought a map update card, the old one was needed during the update process, swapping it in and out as instructed on screen. So be aware that the map update alone might not do the job. You may have to order a replacement card through a dealer, and if I remember correctly from enquiring at the time I bought my car*, that was at least double the price of a map update ordered online.

I don't know if there additional steps, too, when swapping a head unit, such as pairing it with one or more of the computers in the car. So I'm not claiming that installing a card ordered through a dealer will be enough to get it working. Just don't know.

* There was no card in the car when I went to see it. Thankfully the salesman found it before I took possession of the Leaf.

Thanks both. I cant imagine how much a new unit would be so this might have to be the best second option. I am surprised though to read so little about it. It seems crazy you cannot swap these out for better units, or at least have an aftermarket solution. I guess this is all part of keeping you in the Nissan ecosystem. Which is a massive pain.

Looks like I am going to have to call Nissan. Not the option I was hoping for :(

Not just Nissan. When I bought our Renault Scenic second hand (soon to be booted for a Niro EV), the built in sat nav and radio didn't work. Told the dealer I'd have the car but only if the everything worked.
Long story short he ended up having to buy a second hand sat nav and radio, then pay Renault a fortune to code them to the car. Told me he made a loss on the sale as a result. My heart bled.

I can only assume it's a revenue generation exercise as you suggest. It's impossible to remove the tomtom from the Renault without a lot of dismantling, and the radio (or tomo tom for that matter) wouldn't fit in any other model of vehicle as it's not standard aftermarket unit. So having them security coded to a particular vehicle serves no useful purpose at all.

I guess with an EV and it being integrated into more of the cars systems it might be necessary to ensure the firmware is correct for the car, but there's no reason at all it should cost a lot of money.

Ok that was a waste of time. Nissan dealer tells me that I may need to send it off to clarion in france for £1000 with no guarantees, and couldnt tell me how much it would cost to replace otherwise. My only other attempt at helping me was to speak to the customer service line....

I dont suppose anyone knows of a service where they can do some fault finding?

I would love to get a 3rd party head unit as hate the Nissan ICE system its just so poor when you've come from an Audi/BMW. Any advice on double din face plates or anyone know of anyone who's had one fitted. I don't care about loosing all of the nissan info as most of it is so poor with a crapy GUI!

The main problem is that also I think you would loose the climate control settings some people say but my 2018 2.Zero leaf has the climate stuff under the headunit right????

How old is the leaf ?

There was a guy who was flashing the newer Leaf firmware onto original leafs. This gave Google auto etc functionality but you lost the heating timer functionality.

This was flashed over original head unit firmware / as card. Unsure if it would work with a replacement head unit.

Probably worth digging out the thread on here. Some people on here did try it and it worked on original head units at least. Might get round coding issues ?

Hi

Thought I would report back. I found someone to help me with it. Xanavi.net . Unit was reflashed and restored to functioning from the secure message as seen above.

£300 lighter, however a grand for clarion to look at it with no guarantees left me high and dry for a solution. Really piss poor service from Nissan.

Hope this helps someone else in the future. The unit still dies and resets occasionally but that I am sure is the android auto implementation and nothing else.

Cheers

My Leaf 2018 ze1 head unit kept rebooting whilst using Android auto recently particularly annoying as you need the next instruction on maps. I thought it was a memory issue couldn't cope with the data being transferred. The car has been sat a couple of days and when I got in it yesterday the headunit wouldn't boot. Screen backlight came on got the Nissan logo but nothing after that. Several turn car on and off operations did not work either I took the SD card out and did another power cycle, After I put the SD card back in in the head unit booted, not sure if was first time after the card was put in but it is working again now, for how long I don't know. Possibly worth trying removing the card and powering on and off to see if it works for anyone with a similar issue.

I suppose that could be possible I don't know how memory is installed in the units. Not much I do about apart from reflashing I one post for £300 but if it was the a ove issue that would t work.
Thinking about .issue it might of rectified itself after I took the dogs for a walk and locked up the car for 30mins or so. I think other people have had it come back on after locking the car and waiting a while.
I don't have a manual for the head unit is there a reset button anywhere?
