2018 530e - LFP battery?

Hello,

I’m buying a 2018 530e and can’t find anywhere an in-depth specification for the battery it has. All I know is that it will be a 9.2kwh lithium-ion battery.

Does anyone know if this is an LFP battery? I only ask as with LFP batteries you are meant to charge to 100%, whereas most other batteries the recommendation to charge to 80%.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks
GF

As said, don't worry about the charging. Charge to 100%, especially since it is a PHEV, you will need it. I have a 330e 2020 and charge to 100% all the time, drive electric until the car switches on the ICE if needed. The battery is fine after three years of similar use. We do the same with the Leaf also, which is an EV, and will do the same with our coming future cars as well. I think that the 80% recommendation is something we can ignore, especially if one charges with AC chargers most of the time, like we (me an my wife) do. The Leaf we have is over four years old and the battery is not degraded yet and I expect our coming cars will be fine as well.

I picked up the car over the weekend.

Yesterday, I charged the battery to full, but was shocked that the battery range was 9 miles. It has been a cold frosty weekend so I assumed the cold might be affecting the stated range.

I pre-conditioned the car this morning and when I got in the battery was fully depleted. Surely just pre-conditioning can’t have such an affect?

I’ll be looking through the service documents in more detail tonight. Car first registered in October 2018, so still under the battery warranty. Used approved also gave me 2 years warranty, not sure if that includes the battery though.

Sure? Why not? Heating a car from subzero to toasty warm requires a huge amount of energy! And a PHEV only has a small battery.

My Golf PHEV shows 28-ish miles on a good day. Winter is more like 20. However the other day I cranked the heater to defrost the windscreen and heat the interior while I cleared the snow off the car. When I got in it displayed 9-miles of range (which jumped to 12 miles when I set the heater to a more sensible setting).

My instrument is not like that, so I am not sure what it is indicated here, so maybe I don't read it right, but let's see. The battery level is at about 95%. Left of that is the GOM (?) indicating 10 miles GOM range for the 95%. To the far left it says in blue "e11.5mi" which I interpret as you have been driving 11.5 miles in electric mode since the battery was at 100%. In total the GOM + this means that your total range should be 21.5 miles. The total range sounds reasonable for your car, but it is impossible that the 11.5 miles required only 5% battery, or that 95% would give you 10 miles. Yes, something is definitely wrong. Take it back to the dealer, show him the picture and explain it. If it's a serious BMW dealer he will recognize the problem, not trying to declare that you are stupid and don't undersatnd how it works. If he is not a BMW dealer then take the car to an authorized BMW shop and get help from there and make your dealer pay for it, because something is definitely wrong here. I don't know if the charge indicator function is part of the battery warranty or not, but seeing this picture it tells me that that is the most likely faulty part, especially if you really can drive 10 more miles. The sensing circuit seems to be broken. Of course, that can be part of the battery, or the indication can be wrong because of a battery issue, I am not a BMW tech, only they know that more precisely. At this stage, I'd take a drive and check if I can drive about 10 more miles before the ICE starts to see if the range is normal. BTW, is "COMFORT" mode a hybrid mode or all electric? I'd test the battery range through using electric drive only.

BMW checked the pack and said it was fine, best I have got is 16 miles in the summer (blowers off the whole time). In the winter (5 degrees and below) I’m lucky to get 10 miles. Average 12-13 miles on a full charge, far lower than BMW’s stated range of 29 miles 🤦🏼‍♂️

Charge it to 100% every night.
