2020 Kona - Software update

Another message in this forum prompted me to download the software update (I'm only after the general software, not the sat-nav). Installed the downloader on my laptop, ran it and plugged a 64GB USB drive in to get the firmware transferred onto. But when I plug the USB drive into the car and try update the software - I simply get the message to plug the the USB drive in.

The USB port works fine with Android Auto.

Any idea what might be going on?

Are you sure you got the correct version of software? You say 2020 Kona but they changed to the facelift model about September 2020 so is your car the early 2020 or the late one?

The dimples on the front are the difference. You need to download the 2019 update (technically it's MY19 although in most markets they didn't sell them until 2020). The update site is confusing in that regard. It's also interesting to note that you're getting a different model list than the one I see but I guess that's market specific.

Judging by the flag on your profile I think you're in Australia(?) If you check the notification update on the Hyundai update site and click through to the 'list of eligible vehicles' I think you'll see this list which is a bit clearer that they think in Australia the facelift is from 2021 although why the updater app itself has a different list I don't know.

Anyway, in the car, if you go to the list of software version numbers my belief is you will see the navigation system version number begins OS19.AUS... which means your model number is OSBS.S5AMN.AU. You can type the model number into the search box in the updater and it will give you the exact version to download.

Thx for the explanation.

The 2019 Kona software claims to need an SD card not an USB drive. Any idea where the SD slot might be hiding, as a quick scan of the interior didn't provide any hints.
Googling I found this, no idea how accurate it is "Put your hand on the top of the radio, and slide down toward the back of the radio. There is a plastic cover you can remove, the SD card is behind it. "

Yes, I should have spotted that the model list I posted has the 2019-2020 model listed as Standard Gen5 navigation. The model switches in the UK went to Gen5W at the start of 2020 which I'd assumed was the one we were talking about. Sorry about that.

After looking at this closer I've noticed that the version name format in the update files the downloader selects and on the screen is different:

  • downloaded version: OS_E_20.AUS.S5W_L.001.001.241220
  • currently installed version: OSEV.AUS.SOP.V101.190719.DAU_A

which makes me believe this is the wrong software for my car. The DAU_A suffix means no SD card and no navigation variant. I have tried to find a different version but it always points back to the same downloader.

The USB drive works fine - it get's correctly scanned for audio files when inserted.

I think you might have to contact Hyundai about it. The first part of the version number should be the same so I wonder if for some reason they don't have updated software on the download site for your particular configuration.

Do ensure that you have formatted the USB to the requested format for the Kona. [BTDT]
