Alarm problem fixed by dealer software update... and charging more reliable?

Hi all,

Long term lurker here, just wanting to share a couple of things which I found interesting.

My Launch Edition e-tech had the common issue with the alarm going off 30 seconds after locking. I took it to an appointment at the dealer on Tuesday. I was expecting to hear that they'd re-routed some wires as others have had done, but was surprised to find out that they'd 'pushed an update to it'. Apparently this was an update that could only be applied at the dealership (not OTA) and it doesn't appear in the car's software update history. I was skeptical, but after several days I'm 100% happy that the alarm is now behaving.

Separately, and take this with a pinch of salt, but I have an inkling that charging might have become more reliable since this update too... Since the updated I've plugged in 3 times to chargers that have previously been troublesome; once to a commercial BP pulse point, and twice to a residential zappi. In the past each has required many plug/unplugs and locks/unlocks, but I was quite surprised to find these just worked first try.

I can't say for sure that this is down to whatever was updated - it may be something else or just dumb luck. But I wanted to share, and will pass on to Renault as well.

Hi, rnorth, Can you tell me the name of the dealer? My Megane e-tech was in a dealership for 4 days while they wrestled with this alarm problem. Got the car back on 29th September and it has gone off 3 times since then. It is 4th October now!! If there is a software update, maybe it hasn't been done on my car, as the cars sit in compounds for weeks until a dealer can sell them.

Thanks

Hi glassrod57 - actually I should have followed up on this thread ages ago. It only took a few more charges for me to realise that this had not fixed the Zappi problem. Also recently I found out that the dealer had just disconnected the volumetric sensor, which I'm very unhappy about. I think the software update line was just something the dealer said to get rid of me.

Fortunately Renault UK helped resolve; on the alarm side of things it was literally just a case of doing the proper re-routing of wires that should have been done in the first place. A Renault UK engineer oversaw this, as my car was being used to trial the Zappi software update a couple of weeks ago.

I've been impressed with Renault UK despite the delays, but there seems to be a massive knowledge gap between them and the dealers for some reason. If your dealer is wrestling with the alarm problem as you say, perhaps the best thing to do would be contact Renault UK support and get them to tell the dealer precisely what to do.

Hi,
The alarm malfunction is due to wiring to the courtesy lights. When you turn off your alarm after sounding listen for beeps.

2 beeps- triggered by volumetric sensor.
3 beeps - triggered by anti lifting protection
4 beeps - triggered by bonnet,door,boot protection.

The wiring in the overhead console (white RX ) is the culprit and needs to be away from light wires.
Got this info from Renault dealer as I work for Renault Trucks. Hope this helps.

Hi John,

I have a similar alarm problem. At the end of September the car went into Renault Arnold Clark (Hillington, Glasgow) on the 26th September. They struggled for 3 days and then said it was fixed! 3 days later it started again. I have tried manual opening/closing, auto opening/closing and turning off volumetric sensor. Since October 2nd it has gone off 46 times, which is really starting to piss off the neighbours. It goes in again to Renault Arnold Clark( Stirling). I am not confident that they will fix it. As you said the before the knowledge gap between Renault UK and the dealerships is huge and the Megane E-Tech isn't a big seller UK wide. Renault UK have been good. (A lady called Deepa has been assisting me with the dealerships). Shared knowledge and "Best Practice" don't seem to occur.
I will post my results after the car is returned "sometime" next week.

It is usually in my hand, as I am now prepared to unlock/lock the car the moment the alarm goes off. I also keep my key fob in a Faraday box for security(cloning) reasons. Renault UK really need to step up to the mark and get this sorted. This is not an EV issue. Any decent auto electrician should be able to diagnose and fix this problem.

Well, after latest visit for the alarm, windows dropping by themselves, knocking at rear and camera view fault they have informed me........
Car is not safe to drive due to brake fault coupled with front camera and knock noise when releasing footbrake. Windows dropping due to doors not being correctly sealed at the factory leading to water ingress on door wiring looms, knocking at rear requiring bump stop replacement. The alarm has had wiring rerouted again ( via France! ) ro hopefully solve alrm triggering randomly.
Will keep posting as Renault get around to rectifying this lot.

Hi all,

Took delivery of a 24 plate Megane E-Tech Techno+ this week - late Jan/Feb build.

Had it two mornings now and each morning I’ve walked outside (key in my pocket), the alarm instantly goes off. The key is kept in a faraday pouch overnight (as is the spare).

It’s disappointing to know that cars are still being delivered with this fault nearly a year later than it was discovered.

Other than this problem, the car is absolutely brilliant and exceeds our expectations.

I guess I’ll need to book in at the dealer. Is this the “reroute wiring” fix, or is it software related? This doesn’t seem to be going off at random, it seems to be each time I walk towards the car after the key being in a faraday pouch overnight.

Automatic locking/unlocking is enabled. Would disabling this fix it in the short term?

It sometimes goes off if the signal exists but is weak.

Try keeping the fob in the pouch until you are a foot away from the car, that will give some indication if it's related to a weak signal.

Does it matter which fob you use.
It could be a weak battery which could easily be solved by fitting a decent quality battery and doing it properly without almost flattening the new battery which does sometimes happen.

There is also a possibility that the signal is weakened by having the fob in a certain pocket. Does it still go off if you approach the car holding the fob on your hand.

Has it been going off more when it's raining or less when dry and sunny, again the signal will be weaker when it's raining or misty.

I had a few occaisions where the alarm went off, all were traced to the car receiving a weak signal from the fob so there's a chance you could reduce the issue just by doing things differently.

Little update. I called two local Renault dealers but neither can get me in for two weeks. So I’ve turned off the proximity lock/unlock for the time being.
This has 100% cured it for now.
So, looks to be related to the keyless/proximity unlock feature. I’m happy enough pressing the lock and unlock keys on the fob for now until Renault can take a look. I’ll keep you updated!
