Personally if I'm in the car I probably want to charge the phone anyway so I use magnetic charge cables. You can almost throw the cable in the general direction of the charge port and it connects. So you can do it while driving without looking. It also means not risking damaging your charge port as you are not plug anything in and out all the time.

I've got AA Wireless and also chatted with the main Devs a few times, it's really good. I've also retrofitted a wireless charging pad into my A4 if I need it.

 

In my Zoe50, I recently started using the "Carplaykit A2A" mentioned in the article @GavJ linked.
It just works. No special app needed, just plug it into the car and pair it to your phone's bluetooth.

These devices are basically a mobile phone processor running the uprated bluetooth chip that the car makers cheaped out of fitting.

 

I use these, they plug in rather than entire cables which you have to throw when they stop working (been there)

They also fast charge compatible

 

Carsifi not cheap but great little device. Highly recommended.

 

I believe the v4 of the carlinkit can now do both Apple carplay and android auto.

I have a v3 carplay only one and it mostly works (although I did have to set an FPS limit to stop it crashing my leaf headunit)
