Apple Carplay keeps disconnecting

Hi,

Anyone else having this problem? I've had the car from new since October and everything was okay until about a month ago when carplay will just disconnect. Sometimes I can travel 15-20 minutes minutes before it disconnects, other times, it disconnects within 1-2 minutes. I have tried 3 different cables and it's still happening. The USB port is working fine as it is still charging the phone. When I pick media, the Carplay is not able to be picked once it has disconnected. Once it disconnects, I usually cannot get it to connect again until the next time i'm in the car, and then again, it will disconnect.

Thank you.

The USB data socket in the Niro is not brilliant. There are several reports from owners, including myself, who get random dropouts from audio and this is from a metal USB stick directly in the port.
There was some discussion about a poor cable connection behind the fascia but I've not bothered to pull that part of the car apart to check it.

As I was at my dealer today, I asked about this. They said it isn't just a Niro thing. They get reports from new Sportage owners as well. So perhaps it's just something about the new kit they're using, but it very much sounds like it's something we'll be stuck with living with...

I hope we are not stuck with it. I really don't want it disconnected while using Apple Maps. I know the Niro has sat nav but just much prefer Apple Maps.
I'm going to give the dealership a ring tomorrow and speak with them.

I've been having the same problem and whilst I have had fluff and poor cables be the issue in the past with the Niro EV it does appear to be an issue on the harness cable behind the dash similar to that shown in the video. My reasons for thinking this:
  • It does the same on my wife's Andriod phone as my iPhone
  • We've tried multiple cables with both phones including the original manufacturer's cables.
  • If we take either of the phones (using the same cables) and put them in our daughter's Picanto there are no issues
  • Temperature does appear to make a difference in how long it takes to disconnect the first time and how often it subsequently disconnects
  • Vibration or bumps in the road also seem to often correlate to the disconnects.
I've seen in the past that the connection can oxidize and simply removing and reinserting can be enough to scratch the connectors such that they make a better connection. The dealer is going to have the car back in to take a look and hopefully fix the issue.

Same problem here. I booked it in at the local dealership but all they did was check that the latest updates were installed. They couldn’t replicate the problem so I got the car back with the usual update your phone and use approved cables advice.
Since then I’ve be paying closer attention to triggers and most occurrences correlate with bumps in the road, but not all bumps cause a disconnect. A cattle grid seemed to be the most reliable way of getting it to disconnect. Sometimes after I’ve had a disconnect I get further instances without a bump (which is why initially I was unsure if there was a relationship or not).

I will book my car in again too. Brian, if yours is fixed it would be useful if the dealer can give you enough detail to note here so that I can give my dealer as precise info as possible. I have a feeling that without me providing detail I will be struggling to explain beyond there may be a dodgy connection somewhere!

Will do, I don't know when the car is going in for them to look at it but if they fix it I will ask for some details on what they do.

I had major disconnection issues with my USB audio yesterday at the beginning of a 2-hour journey with an early start at 07:00

It was cold at -1C and the car needed to be defrosted before I set off. I noticed also there was moisture on the inside of the windscreen (which is a different issue I'll take up with my dealer), so spent 10 minutes sitting there waiting for the front demist to dry that out enough for safe viewing when driving.

Anyway, for the first 20 minutes or so of that journey, irrespective of road conditions or say going around roundabouts, the USB audio cut out for a few seconds at a time somewhere between 4 and 6 times a minute. i.e. a lot!

But then it just stopped doing that and was rock solid for the remainder of the 2-hour journey.

This suggests to me, potentially in addition to any issues of poor connections or dust in connections, that the sockets are sensitive to temperature and humidity. I've fired off an email to my dealer with this info, and await their response.

This has been my experience too with temperature and possibly humidity as a variable too. I've also had it in reverse to your experience where I've had say the first 20-30 minutes of a journey with no issue and bumps alone not being enough but then once it starts it can become unbearable where I just stop using it. I still think it is related to poorly seated or oxidized internal connections though. When the connection is poor the slightest variation in temperature can make all the difference with connectors/cables or the plastic trim they are attached to expanding and contracting.

What I've seen with other cars is that the harness can become oxidized in the parts bins and then when installed the process of plugging in may scratch/clean the connectors but only just perhaps on just part of a pin. The connection is then good enough to pass QC but then the slightest knock or temperature change can make the connection fall below the required level (whether that be an open circuit or resistance outside of operational tolerances). Tolerances can also play a part where connectors can be made by different manufacturers and/or of different materials. This is often the case where a harness connects to a module like a head unit.

Update:
Today I had another example where 10 minutes of the system working perfectly and then it started to disconnect. It got worse and worse to the point near the end of the journey where I just stopped disconnecting and reconnecting to get the system to work again. This was a 46-mile trip and when I arrived I was having a look at the socket and trim and noticed that the driver's vent to the side of the hazard light switch was closed with nowhere for the warm air to go. I opened the vent and then started the return drive. This may be a complete coincidence but on the return journey (another 46 miles) and close to an hour of driving there was not a single disconnect.

Hi just trying to get a feel for how other Kia dealers deal with warranty. 2020 Kia E Niro.

My apple car play disconnects and connects. Problem because if I’m using it for navigation and I’m in traffic I can lose my route. If I’m updating the software and it disconnects this could cause the unit to be bricked. I have:

1) cleaned the port on my iphone.

2) Tried 3 different cables, the last one a brand new apple cable.

3) Tried 3 different iphones.

4) Had phone forget connection then reconnected.

5) All of the above have not worked.

6) All of the above combinations work flawlessly on out 2019 Hyundai Kona.

Made an appointment with my dealer and was told that I would be charged $169.00 an our to check into the problem. If it was warranty I wouldn’t be charged. I mentioned that behind the dash the USB splits into 2 cables power and data and sometimes the connection oxidizes, needs to be cleaned. Dealers position the if it is corrosion of the connection it wouldn’t be covered under warranty. Not sure how I would have prevented corrosion of a connection behind the dash. This seems to me is a faulty connection and should be covered under warranty.

She then said I’m due for my brakes fluid to be flushed., 59,000 km and only 2 1/2 years old and the brake fluid needs to be flushed?

They flushed the coolant earlier and charged me, this came up later as warranty. When I asked about it they said they couldn’t honour warranty after the fact.

It seems that any time I ask about a warranty item they are looking for ways to deny it.

Anyone else have a similar problem with car play and how has your dealership delt with it.

We're having the same car play disconnect problem. First the Dealer said it was the lead, then that it needed a reset - which took three days - but it made no difference. I asked why it worked fine on my Audi but not on the brand new Nero and they said that's because Audi's are built better! We've given up...but having had 3 Kia's to date we won't be buying another one!

Same problem with my 2023 Niro EV 4. Dealer would not believe any information I provided from this forum, they would not down load any link I provided, they had to get the car in for diagnosis'. This took forever a s I needed a courtesy car. I was amazed they could replicate the car play dropping out fault. They then said the usb connector needed replacing. More waiting. This did not solve the problem. After repeated pressure from me they contacted Kia who said they had logged a “technical something” , they said it needed a new cable assembly. More waiting. This assembly came and it was the wrong part for my car. More waiting . Rang them after a few weeks and they said oh yes a new cable assembly had come in, this assembly was fitted and it has proved successful, apple car play now does not drop out,
This was bloody hard work , many thanks to previous posters on this forum otherwise I would have been fobbed off

Do you have paperwork of what was ordered and replaced? Maybe I show this to my dealer to convince them this is a car problem and not my cable issue?

Hello everyone. I have exactly the same problem with my 2023 Kia Niro EV 4. Apple CarPlay worked fine for the first couple of months but since then has deteriorated. Disconnects have become more frequent. I think bumps in the road can make things worse but really it seems pretty random. Often it becomes unusable now with disconnects every few minutes.

My only contribution at this stage is to suggest trying wireless Apple CarPlay. Like many people here I have become convinced that the USB-A connector in the Kia Niro EV is flakey. Plugging the phone in will always charge the phone - but the data connection drops out randomly. It’s almost certainly a dodgy connector or cable behind the facia and will be almost impossible to get at. No wonder most Kia dealerships push back when asked to fix it. It will be hours of work to replace a minor part. Like everyone else I have tried different iPhones and different cables. None of them resolve the problem. Also like everyone else these phones and cables work perfectly in another Kia (my wife’s Picanto in this case). Not sure how far that kind of evidence will go in helping a dealership undertake some expensive work to resolve it though. Easier for them to just blame the phone, cable, or fluff!

I spotted the suggestion to use wireless Apple CarPlay on another Kia forum somewhere.
I was sceptical at first but desperate to resolve this without a prolonged battle with my dealership.
You can buy the wireless adapter from Amazon. They start at around £30 so it’s a bit of a gamble.
I paid about £50 for mine. You plug it into the Kia USB-A CarPlay port and setup takes a minute or 2.
You have to Bluetooth pair your phone with the adapter and then WiFi connect your phone to the WiFi signal the adapter creates. That's it. Once it is setup the phone will connect automatically next time.

The phone can stay in your pocket and as your Kia EV starts up the Apple CarPlay homepage appears on your car screen. I’ve only had it a week but so far no drop outs whatsoever.

Why does it work? Not sure. I can only assume slightly different voltages are being used as the phone is no longer being charged via the USB-A port. That's only a guess.
I'll report back here after more thorough testing.
Might be worth considering though if your Kia dealership is playing hardball.

I have the carlinkit wireless carplay adapter in my Genesis, and whilst it works for carplay app use, if streaming music from Apple Music or Amazon Music, I do get the occasional audio stutter that I don't experience when cabled direct. It's minor and rare, but I should make you aware it's not "perfect".

I just stumbled on this alternative wireless CarPlay dongle adapter. £40.
Note. I have no idea if it’s any good. I have no interest in CarPlay. I just thought somebody here may be interested In giving it a shot? Please don’t blame me if it’s total crap! Cheers Peter.
