Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP) system UK

Am I correct in understanding that this sound on the LEAF was removed totally from UK cars due to our laws of sounding horns after 11pm at night and dawn?

If the system had to be removed from UK cars then why did Nissan just remove the speaker that made the sound and not replace the on/off switch on the dash for a dummy/blanking plate or better still completely remove the system. The button on the dash is still live and it shows a light on the instrument panel when pressed to show it has been turned off (which as I unserstand it is actually the default in the UK). A blanking plate/button would prevent the button from activating the mute function and illuminating the warning light. It just seems a cheapskate way of getting around the UK law.

Unless I have completely misunderstood the system, I have never heard any noise outside of the car.

The Leaf 40 also has front and rear sensors which beep internally for the driver for when the sun is on the camera or it is covered in muck.

There is also something called a rear window and mirrors to look out of :D, but they again are for the driver, whereas the ‘whistle’ is for pedestrians.

Nothing beats a pedestrian looking where they are going as opposed to looking at their mobile :ROFLMAO:

I've never heard mine so maybe it isn't working. From what you guys say, maybe if it is that annoying, it is something I had not ask to be fixed. I've asked other people if they have ever heard anything when I drive away and nobody has.

The 40kwh has this system and its enabled by default.
You can either switch it off using to button to the right hand side of the steering wheel, or disable it completely using LEAF spy.
I did the latter :)
I'll check with LeafSpy to see if it has been switched off. It's possible I may have turned it off when fiddling around with LeafSpy. <embarrassment mode> :notworthy:

I can only really hear mine with the windows down and driving slowly. I don’t struggle too much with my hearing yet, but things are beginning to get a bit indstinct in crowded rooms, for example. I suspect that when I finally succumb to hearing aids the pedestrian warning sound will suddenly get louder.

At last, I've heard it inside the car. I thought that noise was the air conditioning whirring. I was caught in a very long traffic jam and only moving 2-3mph at a time. Every time I stopped, the noise stopped. As soon as I started creeping forward, it started up again. Then realised if I press the VSP button, I could turn it off or on.

I was expecting a loud beeping noise, buzzer or the sound a petrol car engine makes. But it sounds just the same as my fridge at home with the gas circulating when the pump is off.

I could only hear it inside the car. I opened the window and stuck my head out, didn't hear a thing. Maybe I do need to get my ears syringed.

I can't see how that is going to warn anybody at all.

I live in the US (Virginia) and the US cars do not come with a switch. I would be glad to have the ability to turn the VSP noise on and off. Would you consider selling your switch and related wire to the VSP module. I would gladly ship you a blank to go back in your dash. You would have a cleaner looking car and I would gain the ability to turn the VSP noise off.

You can turn the sound on/off with LeafSpy in the VSP Settings.

o Drive Start Sound - Outside sound generated when the Leaf starts to move to alert pedestrians that a vehicle nearby is moving.
o Drive Sound - Outside sound generated when the Leaf is moving a low speed.

You don't really need to use a switch on the dash if you want it off permanently.

New regulations will shortly REQUIRE EVs to have such an audible warning. It will not be backdated but switching off may be deemed an offence.
The pedestrians that these are supposed to warn may not have very good hearing. I cannot hear mine (neither can anyone that I have asked) but the dealer says he can.
I want to replace the NISSAN part with a louder buzzer or, better still, a sound chip/ speaker system.
Can anyone tell me WHERE EXACTLY the sounder is, please?

Old news. All new electrified vehicles to emit warning sound | Auto Express

That's if you trust an article that has an embedded link that says "UK electric cars will require twice the world's supply of cobalt.".

And especially when it contains the nonsensical statement "The AVAS rules apply to all new cars made from 1 July 2019, and all new electric and hybrid cars registered from July 2021.". (Someone at AutoExpress needs to draw a Venn diagram.)
