Audi Connect / SIM issues

Hi again.

When I first (eventually) got Audi Connect set up with a pre-loaded Vodafone SIM it seemed OK. I was able to get traffic news, weather etc etc so I know it was working once upon a time. But then it stopped. Every time I tried to launch it, it would think for ages and then say "the service is unavailable". It never said "you have no data on your SIM" or anything like that.

Nonetheless, I wondered whether the data or time had expired on my SIM (like an idiot I have no record of how much data I had bought, or whether it had a expiry date). I do know I had used tiny amounts of data though as I used Connect very rarely indeed.

So yesterday I removed and replaced the SIM - just to make sure it was correctly located - and added a fiver's worth of data.

Since then the car doesn't recognise the SIM at all. As soon as I launch Audi Connect it tells me "Data service not available. Please insert a SIM card".

Now I don't know what to do. I've read that others have had to go back to dealers with similar faults. Is there anything to try before I give up and bite the bullet?

Thanks for any help.

Sitting at dealer at moment whilst they finally attempt to sort this issue. Seems I'd dropped of their radar after they said I needed a new MMI system when looked at 2 months ago ! Hopefully fitted today but holding my breath. Service advisor did say he had another E-tron recently with similar issue. I'd get it into Audi to get sorted.

OK... for anyone who still has the will to live after reading my initial post, here is the (satisfactory) outcome.

I finally figured out that, somehow, the "Turn Data Module Off" function within Telephone had been activated. Whether by me in my clumsy fumblings, or by the car I cannot say.

When the Data Module is turned off the SIM reader is (perhaps obviously) not active, so the SIM cannot be seen by the car.

But instead of having a nice helpful message when you try to activate Audi Connect while in this state (something like "Data Module is turned off. Would you like to turn it on", perhaps?), Audi MMI is so unintuitive that it simply tells you that "Data service is not available. Please insert SIM card".

I had spent hours fiddling and arguing with Vodafone about the SIM before I figured this out. Not Voda's fault at all as it turned out.

I also learnt that once the Data Module has been turned off you have to re-input various vital connection settings for the SIM manually.

This is all done through Telephone: Settings: Connection Settings (slightly counter-intuitively, when you imagine it might all be within Audi Connect).

If anyone ever needs to know, the settings for a Vodafone SIM are:-

APN = pp.vodafone.co.uk
Username = wap
password = wap

Sorry for all the tedious information which I am sure most of you already knew. Prontouk, I'm sure your dealer will soon figure it out too ;-)

Thanks for your answer but unfortunately mine is more complicated. The "Turn Data Module" option failed to activate anything. Dealer has now confirmed they are fitting a new control unit. Glad you got yours sorted without too much pain. A couple of people are reporting issues after being in for 1st service. I'll ask more tomorrow when I get car
