I thought the headlight sensor was in the binnacle behind the rear view mirror? The sensor on the dash is, IIRC, to do with aircon?

I think the optical sensor is on the dash.
At the OP, is the satnav going to night mode at the same time as the lights are on?

 

Pretty sure it's stuck to the windscreen behind the rear view mirror.

Pretty sure yours is either broken, disconnected or obscured.

 

It's not.
It's on the left side of the dash near the windscreen, under a little flap thing.
If you retro-fit auto headlights, you remove that flap and there's already the shape of the optical sensor there to be cut out.
Going by the fact the little flap has never fitted properly in my car, I'm guessing the previous owner had to have the sensor replaced.
