Buying a used Tesla, will I be able to supercharge on the journey back?

If I purchase a privately sold Tesla, will I be able to supercharge on the way back?

Ideally, the transfer of ownership in the Tesla account will happen immediately so it will be billed under my own account. If this is not possible, then hopefully it will allow me to supercharge but bill the previous owner (and I will reimburse them for this cost). Worst scenario is it won't allow me to supercharge at all :-(

Any one who can share their experience with this?

I don’t have an exact answer but I’m looking at this now as I’m in the same boat.

If there is no hold on the vehicle (like finance) then I believe it can transfer instantly.

here’s a useful video that shows the process :

Just to add, I’ve not heard many times that the car will be refused supercharging, so it will likely be ok.

Ask the owner to charge to 100% before you collect. Also download ZapMap as that has non Tesla options.

What age car is it? Does it have the CCS upgrade? That's also a consideration with non tesla chargers as that would limit you to AC if you can't get supercharging to work.

I bought one and just plugged in but it had free supercharging anyway so it wasn't any consequence to the previous owner. The change of owner process if the previous owner can't do it is a pain in the backside. The online method via tesla basically doesn't work and will often reject everything so you have to phone them up and they can sort it out over the phone and you send the same documents via email and magically everything is fine.

I'd plug the route in to ABRP as well to see how much of a charge it might need as that is pretty accurate so you will know what you are in for.

I had to transfer a Model 3 between accounts twice recently because one of the accounts got stuck on USA location setting and therefore wouldn't accept a UK card.

We set up a new account and transferred the car to it which happened instantly, added the debit card for supercharging and it was good to go immediately.

So, in our experience it shouldn't be a problem and you can set it up right away assuming the previous owner has it set up in their app and is happy to transfer the car over right away. It can all be done from the mobile app.

Tesla have a short guide on how it's supposed to happen and what you need:

I rung the general service phone number from what I remember but that was after trying the online claim ownership thing first.

I'd definitely get the CCS upgrade done as it's very useful as otherwise lots of superchargers you can't use as they're CCS only.

Sticking my paranoid hat on, I want to make sure the car hasn't been banned by Tesla for using the superchargers (for whatever reason). Ordinarily, I would ask to see the car supercharging before purchase but the seller is quite some distance away from the nearest one so I don't know how open they will be to this. Is there another 100% definitive way to know if the car is okay to supercharge? Perhaps, asking Tesla? I have the reg and VIN number for the car.

Just seen you are looking at buying privately which does make it make complicated. Maybe ask seller to do a video showing it Supercharging and the VIN on the centre screen?

That said, it is highly unlikely for the car to be blocked as that only occurs on accident rebuild cars. You will have your own account for the car and your account should be fine.

You need to follow steps in your Account on the Web site to add a used Tesla. I don't think they do it by phone any longer.
