I haven't read every single post on this thread, so maybe it's already been posted but in the manual it says:

"*1 When the coolant level is low, have the reservoir filled by an authorized Kia dealer by using only designated coolant water for electric vehicles."

Is this statement actually legal? Is that a 'get it done with a Kia dealer or invalidate the warranty' statement?

Checked my Coolant and it's sitting right on the minimum marker. The Manual says it should be halfway between the Max and Min markers.

I've had the car a week and it's the first time I've checked it. Surely if the manual says halfway it should be thereabouts after just a week?
In a perfect world, yes you are correct. Also the time since new should not make any difference, as the coolant is not normally consumed at all, even over years.

If you read this thread you will see that our conclusion is that because the coolant system is so large and very complex that sometimes they may leave the factory with a trapped air bubble somewhere in the murky depths of the coolant pathways. At this point the coolant level in the tank will look correct.

Then in the course of normal driving, that air bubble will eventually find its way out and burp into the tank. Then the tank visible level will reduce by the amount of air that was released.

Yours is not as bad as mine and some others on here (I wish mine was on the min level!). At the minimum level is quite ok really. Just periodically keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t drop any further. Then at some point ask your dealer to top it up a little. In fact, if I were you I would probably leave it until the first service, providing it drops no further. Mention it to them when you book it in.

It’s certainly nothing to panic about and it won’t affect anything. It might even come back up a little come the summertime and the fluid expands when it’s warmer :)

A quick follow on. So after another 2 top ups the dealer has wanted the car back for a week to fully investigate & after 2 days they have decided that it is the 'water pump' (i presume they mean coolant pump) that needs changing and they have ordered a new one.

I find this strange given that it has been on the ramp a couple of times looking for any sign of a leak with 3 top ups. Normally this check would probably be one of the 1st things you would do - unless of course it is hidden away in the 'gubbins' of the engine somewhere.

We'll see! We should know tomorrow.

Funny how the on screen message describes it as 'inverter coolant'

Yup. I believe it circulates through the big battery, the inverter, the traction motor etc etc. Lord knows how much it contains..... l shudder to think!

Ironic that the warning display just calls it 'inverter coolant' lol.
I bet many others have this fluid below the minimum level. I would be interested to know guys. Please check yours!

Peter
Mine was low and dealer topped up after a couple of weeks ownership.

Has everyone else who has had the low coolant warning actually had low coolant?
As I had the warning appear once about a week ago, when I checked it was touching the Max level and not error since. I wonder if it could also be a sensor issue.

Hi ritzspark

I had the message at 450 miles in to my new 3 64KwH. It happened following a rapid charge but surprised me as it was 3 deg C outside. Took it to local dealer for an afternoon earlier in Jan. Fault message had cleared and then reappeared three times but not when at dealer. They couldn't replicate it. They followed procedure to clear airlocks in system and the level was halfway between marks when I left the car with them and when I picked it up.

Done 600 miles more and the level is ok. No more warning messages either. Dealer closed the job on Friday (so they can submit claim to kia uk for their work) so this incident should now be recorded with kia if they are collecting stats.

The dealer asked me if I had tried using a rapid again when I rang to let them know I hadn't seen the warning again. I haven't , but maybe Kia UK have heard of others. Mine is the first E Niro running higher (1500 miles a month) mileages at the dealer I use so I'm expecting any issues to be probably the first they see. They wanted to know where I had bought the car from and when I told them it was a company car they were genuinely surprised.

I'll post if I see any recurrence.

So they fitted the water pump and an eagle eyed technician spotted the smallest drip ever on another seal in a pipe

After further investigation a fibre washer had been fitted badly when it was built. It was folded and split. I get it back today.

Hopefully I’m done.

That’s interesting. Could you possibly try find out exactly where this leaky pipe union was located? (Even better if a photo could be taken). This info could be really useful for others with low coolant issues to check for.

I know this might not be possible. Thanks. Peter.

I’ve had mine just under 4 weeks and done 500 miles, should I just keep an eye on it ? It’s sitting just below low and I’ve just came in from a 30 mile drive. do the dealers charge for a top up if required ?

The price of a bottle is down from £75 to about £30.
Mine did it for free under warranty. They topped it up, it went down again they inspected couldn’t find an issue but suspected a washer which they changed. Topped it again been fine since.
