France A13 hotel with EV charging?

Hi folks,

Hoping to tap into some of the collective experience if possible. I'm planning on taking my Niro EV and 12 year old daughter to Tignes for a ski trip during the Easter hols. Have gone plenty of times in an ICE but this will be the first time in an EV.

We're driving down from Dieppe and are getting an evening ferry, so am hoping to do a couple hours driving and then make a late stop at a cheapish hotel, ideally with EV charging. I can't find hardly anything about it online so thought I would ask here. Would be nice to be able to set off for a days driving with 100% charge if I can manage it!

Has anyone done anything like this? I was thinking somewhere before we get to Paris as that will be too far. I know that EV takeup in France isn't as widespread as in the UK so maybe not possible? If not I guess I'll have to fast charge and find somewhere but it will waste time.

Anyway if anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them - thanks in advance :)

George

Take up of EV in France is as virtually as high as UK and there is a very good public charging network with over 118,000 public chargers. Rouen is probably a good choice try searching the Accor chain (ibis mercure novotel so a wide budget spread). Hotels offering destination charging is not that widespread primarily I suspect as the motorways are well served with fast chargers and the towns with slow and rapids. Lidl also have a lot of rapid sites now.
The mercure Honfleur does have chargers in their car park but they have idle charges as they are open to the public. Honfleur is off route too.

Thanks, this is all really interesting. I guess when I've been traveling in France I've mostly been in the provinces so maybe not got the most representative sample of EV take-up.

I have stayed in Kyriad hotels a few times in France and they were fine; simple rooms but clean and cheap. Just what I'm after in fact!

I found the Kyriad in Buc seems to have destination chargers and is about two and a half hours in which is probably OK. I dropped them an email last night so I will update here with what I find out for future peoples reference.

Similar, I used Booking.com on our trip to France last year. Finding hotels with chargers wasn't that hard, but often there was AC charging nearby even if the hotel did not have EV charging. We searched for hotels at a convenient stop off for us, using the EV filter. If that didn't bring up anything suitable we looked on Electroverse for nearby chargers. All this was done ahead of the trip.

Unfortunately, we didn't stop on the specific section you're asking about, so can't offer a suggestion.

Unfortunately since the stop is going to be around midnight and with a tired young co-pilot I need to have a plan - under normal circumstances I'd be more than happy to wing it!

The EV filter on those sites is great but unfortunately seems to leave very few options. I think the Kyriad mentioned above is looking like a good option though.

When I've used Dieppe I've always got the overnight ferry and a bunk, then hit the road in an ICE for the trek down to the Alps - in my case Chamonix for the MB tunnel. I'm also looking forward to my first trip in an EV and like you possibly wing it if my bestie is relaxed about it. Normally we stop on the way back on that basis depending on progress: Sancerre, Orleans, the dump that is Pithiviers etc, and do Caen/Portsmouth whose timing suits us well.

Could you overnight and then stop somewhere like Beaune where there seem to be plenty of charging opportunities or don't the timings work as well? Don't forget your Crit'Air sticker as you'll be going through the Rouen zone.

Thanks Sue - already applied for the Crit'Air although it's not here yet. But apparently the email suffices so should be OK.

Unfortunately the timings are really annoying - I've done the same as you other years, but this time the ferry gets there at 10pm. So I was thinking to drive for a couple of hours and then crash out somewhere and get a full charge if possible in the process. Roads should also be pretty empty that time of night. The Kyriad at Buc appears to be about 2h 25 odd which probably works.

I've charged many times at Ionity Val de Reuil just outside Rouen. There are some other chargers nearby too. Kyriad within sight of the Ionity chargers, and walking distance to a Burger King which is where I normally sit whilst charging!

Mappy BTW can show local chargers if you click on services on the top menu bar, and then select station de recharge from the list that appears

See my experience doing a similar-length trip across France last year. I used Chargemap app as main payment method, also I found the Tesla superchargers useful as you're guaranteed there will be space, but one of them didn't work - maybe as only got 3g comms & not fast enough? 4g was fine though.

On the return trip, we wanted an overnight stop with EV charging, as needed to get to Caen in our case, mid-morning to be safe. So we stopped at Le Mans, plenty of EV charging with a Tesla supercharger site in the north of the city, plus several hotels within a few yards. This might be a bit out of your way, but whatever route you plan, there should be a decent sized town somewhere nearby, with a few chargers in to do a Rapid fillup while you have a meal.

ChargeMyHyundai app also covers payment at some places, but not as many as ChargeMap I reckon! Worth having both. The motorway tolls we used all had card readers, so my passenger simply swiped my debit card out of the LHS window - we got very slick at swiping, then inching forwards a foot to collect the paper receipt!

Thanks all - this is all really useful info and most of all, reassuring that I've not made a bad call by taking the EV.

In terms of an update, I've booked a room at this place: https://versailles-buc.campanile.com/en-us/

Looks to fit the bill perfectly, two and a bit hours in from Dieppe, not too pricey and best of all has free EV charging. So it seems I should be able to start day 2 with a full battery! I'll update here with news for anyone trying the same route in future.

Wow - was the EV charging actually free? What kind of speed did you get (7kw?). Looking at stopping somewhere around Paris en route to the Languedoc, a free overnight charge would be a great thing!

Booking.com has the option to search hotels that have a destination charger. It's as easy as selecting town, date and then adding 'EV charger' as a search criterion. Before booking I always check first if they really have a charger and if it can be booked or what the costs are.
