Getting a ZE50 "fingerprint"

Ok, I'm rapidly getting slightly less enamoured of our Zoe; has anyone had problems getting the car to create the "fingerprint" NDSAllianceConfig type folders/files on a clean formatted USB stick. I've tried everything I can think of to trick the car into playing ball, but no joy. My local dealer is beginning to play less enthusiastic, so facing longer journeys just to get stupid software bugs sorted out.

I was using FAT32, but that post is interesting - I'm going to try a 64gb NTFS and see what happens. I'm also beginning to wonder if the easylink is being a bit too clever, and recognising the uniique flash drive id's (UUID is it called?) and maybe not bothering writing the fingerprint to those its seen before - formatting of course doesn't overwrite that I'm thinking.

update: that didnt work - and easylink toolbox connect did not like an NTFS stick - so much for the manual !!

It might be how it's formatted. You can format USB as either a complete filesystem or as a filesystem with a partition table (single primary partition MBR). It may be that the Zoe doesn't like one or the other. I've not had a problem here with FAT32 on a stick, no matter how many times I've tried it. Not sure if it has a partition table or not though, it probably does, I think that's normal, although not required.

I used a 32GB USB stick. I started by formatting it as FAT32 on Windows 10. I think I then put it in the car which recognised the stick (I'd take all others out first or it won't work) and installed the NDS and TomTom folders and identification info. However, I may have connected it to the Connect Toolbox on the PC first, giving the VIN - it's about a year ago.

I then connected the USB to the Connect Toolbox on the PC and it got on with loading the necessary updates. Then a final insertion into the car to install the update.

I've carried out at least one further update since.

If you continue to have problems I'll repeat with a blank USB stick and confirm the detailed steps.

I'd be grateful - I've pretty much done everything you've just described to no avail. I've ordered a new 32gb stick off amazon, to see if something never before seen by the car helps, but I'm not hopefull. I have a weird problem - it started when i updated the maps a couple of days after getting the car, which worked ok I thought - but then I checked in easyconnect again, and it appeared there were more map updates, so I downloaded, and put in the car - but at that point the "list of maps" in the car dissapeared. The car would at that point create the NDS stuff, because I got to look at the files on a PC, but then, after asking rlink helpline for help, and multiple NDS attempts, the car stopped writing those as well. So it's just getting worse, and it's not helped by the fact that I think my localish dealer isn't keen on looking after zoes any more, so giving the car to them for god knows how long is not a pleasant idea. They also only have 1 EV technician, so they are not allowed to do anything that involves isolating the battery - like giving us the BMS updates !!

Turns out that I need to have a blank 32GB stick to try and I only have 16GB (too small for the update, so rejected) and 64GB (Connect Toolbox says it won't format larger than 32GB, even though the manual says 64GB) sticks. I'll try to get a 32GB stick.

Have a look at the thread containing this post (ZE50 map updates). My post #47 gives a link to download the latest version of Connect Toolbox, which you need for the ZE50. (I still can't easily find a link for the download on the mess of Renault's web sites.) I find the references to EASY CONNECT very confusing!

In the meantime, have you tried formatting your 32GB stick in Connect Toolbox. Insert the stick (I'd remove any others as Renault's software often seems to think they have sole use of a machine) and start the Toolbox. Click on the VIN option and then enter your VIN. You should then be given the option to format your stick, or an error message as to why the software doesn't like it. Once it's formatted that way the car may accept it.

TBH, although obviously I'm very gratefull for the advice, I think this problem is way deeper than what we're talking about. None of the above helps; My problem remains in 2 parts - firstly, the list of maps on the car doesn't show up, and secondly, connect toolbox (and presumably renaults servers) don't know what maps I've got, because the toolbox always says there are map updates available, but the car then says they're the same as its got - even though apparently it wont tell me what its got !!

I think you're right - something has gone wrong with the multimedia system. Probably your best bet is to contact Renault, then they can tell the dealer how to fix it and you can book it in. Not much point going straight to the dealer as they probably won't have a clue, and if it's not a common problem Renault might not have a fix readily available.

Sorry if I sounded ungratefull - I'm not, but it's beginning to bug (no pun intended) me that a ÂŁ28k car, and not exactly a huge luxurious one, can be made so annoying by useless programmers and service techs. I could ignore the inbuilt nav completley, but why the hell should I, and the fact that it seems to be getting worse, scare's the hell out of me if I'm honest. Is anyone any good at their jobs anymore ?

Short answer is just, no.

Left my car with the dealer some days ago to swap some parts, they ended up changing the wrong parts even though I provided written instructions on it, this is even their second attempt on the same issue..

If you want something fixed in today's society it's easier to just do it yourself.

Done that, and removed the fuse for a real, "have you turned it on and off" repair. I think, as has been said by our friend above, this is something really weird - I think there's a series of bugs happened that have caused an unstable setup. I can't quite understand how it can survive a power off reset, but it has. Renault dealer is my only/last hope - but what do I do if they can't, or won't, solve it - thats whats worrying me !!

which is why I'm seriously considering going back to ICE - it feels like EVs are just an extra PITA for mechanics, who don't really want to bother learning new skills, and an excuse for manufacturers to push faulty technology on to us at huge cost and not have any desire to do right by their customers.

We are getting quite off topic here now, but yes i once again agree with you.

But i don't think it's the mechanics that are the problem but more the companies that don't want to adjust.
I just had the firmware updated for the battery management system and also engine, something that seems to only be done at services at a dealership. This gave ny car more range and new functions. The exactly same thing can be done with the car on your driveway if you own a Tesla and perhaps other brands, my Zoe is my first ev so i don't know which other brands support this..

So it's more that be ownership can and should be relaxing, s bit different compared to ice ownership, but it's totally up to the manufacturer to make it as good as it can be. Since obviously some manufactorers are capable of doing it. I would not be surprised if we will see dramatic changes in leading car manufacturers in t upcoming 10years and what companies will still exist..

well, for starters it wasn't new - year and a half old - but yes, I guess there is more to it - the fact that renault have been "working on it" for about 2 months with no results, the fact that somehow the system refuses to reset which I find really strange, the fact that the local dealer appears to be losing interest in zoes, the whole shambolic EV from Renault systems, and finally, TBH, the fact that it never really felt like a grown up car - the ZE50 was way better than the previous models, and I was very positive about it to others, but combine all that with the sudden appearance of a Niro 4 that I could just about afford, which was the car we always wanted, and sorry, but Bye Bye Renault !!
