GivEnergy battery recalibration

Does anyone else's GivEnergy battery do this sometimes?

It suddenly decides it's empty and so charges back up to whatever minimum is currently set.

It's only done it a couple of times, normally when it's not been down very low for ages (ours hasn't been under about 60% for ages recently), so I assume it's when the SOC gets low enough for it to realise the battery isn't as full as it thought it was and recalibrates. Luckily it was in the cheap period...

What is your battery firmware? You should be able to check on the online dashboard. Not sure if it shows on the mobile app.

The firmware should be something like 3009 or 3012 (latest).

Get 3012. It is supposed to fix the issue of soc jumps/adjustments and stability.

The battery will update the firmware, then do a calibration cycle. I think it was full discharge and then charge to 100%.

Yes, mine did that occasionally. I upgraded to the latest firmware (3012) last week so keeping an eye on it happening again.

I think the best time to do it is in the early morning of a sunny day, so it uses solar to recharge after the entire contents is dumped to the grid. I was a bit late starting it at 11:00, so it was charging the battery at peak rate grid from about 16:30. It is an 8.2kWh battery so takes about 3.5 hours to discharge, and then about the same to charge again.

I applied the update today... in doing so I managed to misjudge both the timing and the weather so half of the recharge was on grid power, with the sun finally coming fully out just as the recharge finished, bah!

Interestingly a YouTube video I saw yesterday suggested the discharge would be slower if the inverter was outputting PV as well, but ours seemed to turn off the PV completely while it discharged. Not that it mattered as there wasn't much sun this morning, but if I had known that I would have waited until later in the day before starting it...

Anyway it's done now, let's see if it fixes the occasional sudden jumps in SOC.

Sorry, can't remember what your system inverter is.

But when I did my update, it did throttle the battery discharge due to high PV generation at the time. Half way through the discharge, the PV dropped and the battery filled the gap. So, your limitation is the inverter, and I'm assuming the combined power from PV and battery is way over the capability of the inverter. So, my setup is:
  • inverter 5kW hybrid
  • battery can discharge at 3.6kW
  • so when PV is generating more than 1.4kW, I can't get the full discharge rate from the battery.

I don’t think mine did a recalibration when I upgraded the battery firmware the first time.
I upgraded to the latest version when I added another battery so I had to do a full recommission so I couldn’t say if just upgrading the firmware would have done a full discharge/recharge. Annoyingly I got to the point where the water tank was hot so some of the discharge went as export.

So I'm not sure if this is to do with the new firmware, but I've not seen it do this before...

Our battery got down to 13% last night having not been that low since it recalibrated after the update. It started charging when the sun came up and got up to 16%, but then I paused it so it could charge on the PV output above the 5kw inverter limit later. Over the next half an hour though it sneakily crept up to 21% despite not recording any charging going on.

Previously when it has "readjusted" it has always been downwards in a big jump; this seemed to be a smaller, gradual adjustment upwards instead. That seems a lot more sensible than suddenly having nothing left when you thought you did...

@Phil Himsworth I can tell you what is happening, but not why. I have noticed it before the latest firmware.

The controls for the battery don't really stop/start the charging or discharging of the battery. They only limit it to around 300W. In or out, the minimum is 300W.
