Forgive me if there is a thread on this, but I haven’t seen it.

Although it seems there are going to be 2 hybrid versions of the Golf 8, only the more powerful GTE model will be in the UK.

The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor to produce 242bhp. A 13kWh battery offers up to 43 miles of zero-emissions range, with speeds as high as 87mph achievable without assistance from the engine. The cells are almost twice as dense as before, meaning the 135kg unit is only slightly larger in size than that in the old, discontinued Golf GTE.

The previous GTE was a massive hit, so this one should be the same if VW can produce them in sufficient numbers.

Coming from a 2018 GTE the range would be the only tempting thing, but not enough to justify the cost to switch. Remember there's no PICG for PHEVs any more, so the case for them is weakened. Plus, with the imminent BIK changes favouring BEVs maybe the market is smaller for PHEVs generally, however capable they are. Although, it will be popular because of the poor on-motorway infrastructure I guess.
My aim is to switch into a BEV with at least 200 winter miles range in the next 2-3 years if I decline my ID3 reservation.

Having a 7.5 GTE, I could be tempted in order to get the "real world" figure of 30miles but guess the denser battery will need more charging.
The thing that's really stopping me, apart from my current car hasn't done enough miles to warrant a change, is the cost cutting that VW seem to be following; eg. for the 7.5 removed under drawer seats, no engine cover etc.
For the mk8 GTE, I'm led to believe they have even stopped fitting the gas struts on the bonnet!
Also I have to be convinced on replacing switches with touch screen, if done well and logically placed it could be good but done in current VW style and it will be a pain. Again for a 7.5 example; the button to temporarily disable the interior ultrasonics on the alarm was removed and for occasional use it's quite a search on the screens to find where to disable ... but then it isn't temporary so has to be manually re-enabled..
All in all, the mk8 GTE is probably going to be a great car, but with plenty of annoyances for dedicated owners of existing models!

I think the UK market mk8 GTE will be aimed at stealing sales from the BMW 330e mk2 and Tesla Model3.
It will be priced higher than current due, VW will say, to the high BHP and higher HV battery range.

And still no sign of a Polo PHEV, especially one without go faster strips. Or a Clio one, or Seat Ibiza.
A 13kWh battery in a Polo sized car would be interesting.

This is a massive problem for me too. I’m the left hand house of a 1930’s semi so the charging point will be completely inaccessible (against neighbouring wall), what was wrong with the socket behind the badge?
I love my mk 7 and am reticent to change but the 5 year warranty is up next July so need to start thinking seriously about a replacement. Wife wants a 500e when they finally come out so I’m happy we’ll have at least 1 BEV in the household but to go for another GTE? The general reviews of the mk8 are very good and I like the idea of the extra range but the cost cutting and general styling are an issue IMHO. I am not a fan of the high gloss screens, gesture control and lack of dials.
