As well as the threads discussing the announcement that Gridserve will be replacing all of the legacy Ecotricity/Electric Highway chargers at motorway service areas by Summer/Autumn 2021 (and also gradually installing additional HPC hubs over time) in general, I thought it might be useful to have a dedicated thread to report the upgraded locations when we spot them.

I'll get the ball rolling with the already announced/complete Cherwell Valley location. I guess this thread will be a bit quiet now while it ramps up, but hopefully the location upgrade reports will start rolling in soon!

Will be an interesting thread. 300 to replace in say 3 to 6 months. So thats 3 to 7 ish a day.(y) Even this first phase will transform my trips to Anglesey (when I get my next car). Hoping the hubs begin in this time as well - happy days.

Summer starts 3rd week of June. 2 months away roughly.

There isn't even a list of the new Efacec chargers they put in previously. I can only find Derby (Shardlow), Sandbach North and Oxford something as being done. There has to be more. It's impossible to find out. The new ones did start with a 2 on the charger code and the highest is 19 I've found so far which infers there are more than 3.

You'd have thought they would have announced the new chargers and made a fuss but there doesn't seem to be much on them at all. The other operators are announcing new chargers weekly and often daily.

As well as the ones you mentioned, Birch East (M62) have one. Woodall North (M1) has one. Forest Green Rovers have one. There are a few others too I think I am missing. Durham (A1) was scheduled to get one soon too but I would assume that is no longer a thing following this announcement.

Leigh Delamere services
10+ miles and a few more miles off the motorway for plan B. Single (Chademo and Type 2 IIRC) charger at service. This needs replaced with the new multi-car charger ASAP.

Yes, many times I've arrived at Leigh Delamere only to find some plug-in-hybrid sipping 3.6kW on the AC and nobody to be seen after 45 minutes into their charge. The e-stop might have somehow got nudged.

I said in the other thread that it was next to Greg’s, and there it is. 😀

Why didn’t they replace the other charger, at the same time, as well, at a busy MSA like this?

It may be that they were shamed into replacing this charger, as it was the one recently feature in Ginny Buckley’s, ITV program on electric cars “are we ready”, or is it just me being cynical?

The charger that was removed was originally located at Oxford Services but was replaced because it never worked, it never worked well at Cherwell either.

People heading along the M40 will just use the Instavolt hub at Banbury now.

If you fancy a change, can always fillup at Banbury, jump on to Fosse way via Gaydon, rejoin M1 at Leicester. Lovely scenic route (apart from final Narborough bit!), for me it breaks up the monotony of motorway/duals. Or you can do Fosse way to A5, go up that a few miles to M69 then to M1.

Rownhams services – M27 Hampshire – currently have MSA’s both West bound heading towards Bournemouth, New Forest and East bound heading towards M3 and Portsmouth.

Both MSA’s currently have just 1 Ecotricity DBT A/C and CHAdeMO charger – no CCS so would expect the Westbound be swapped out by Gridserve.

However East bound bigger things are happening:

20/03020/FULLS | Provision of 24no Electric Vehicle charging points | Rownhams East Motorway Service Area M27 Eastbound Service Road Rownhams Southampton Hampshire SO16 8AP (East Bound)

Application for 12 TESLA Duel chargers and 4 Duel Ecotricity chargers X 2 bays each charger – Planning permission is yet to be decided. There have been no objections so should go ahead.

20/03020/FULLS | Provision of 24no Electric Vehicle charging points | Rownhams East Motorway Service Area M27 Eastbound Service Road Rownhams Southampton Hampshire SO16 8AP (testvalley.gov.uk)

BP Rownhams Service Station M27 Eastbound Service Road Rownhams Southampton Hampshire SO16 8AP

Installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, associated power connections and infrastructure

20/02878/FULLS | Installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, associated power connections and infrastructure | BP Rownhams Service Station M27 Eastbound Service Road Rownhams Southampton Hampshire SO16 8AP (testvalley.gov.uk)

Planning Application withdrawn – scheme for 4 chargers at the BP fuel station not going ahead.

Other MSA with Ecotricity Chargers that need swapping out are:

Winchester Services: MOTO

Northbound and Southbound

Sutton Scotney: Roadchef

North bound and Southbound

I will monitor progress and provide updates as and when.

i like the mix of Tesla and regular chargers. Not a huge fan of how many Tesla chargers are off the beaten track. Yes they’re reliable and there are more in each location, but I prefer the convenience of a MSA than the back of a hotel car park if I’m travelling with my family

From Octopus Energy

"Electric Juice doesn't charge any premium on top of the network providers - we simply pass through the cost they give us.
  • Charging on a Char.gy lamppost costs 33p per kWh, with no connection or transaction fees.
  • Charging on an Osprey rapid costs 36p per kWh, with no connection or transaction fees.
  • Charging on an IONITY ultra-rapid costs 66p per kWh, including a 5% discount from Octopus Energy. There are no connection or transaction fees.
  • LiFe Energy, Alfa Power, Plug-N-Go and Hubsta do not have a standard price for charging. The rate you'll pay is that which a regular "Pay as you Go" customer would receive on any of these networks.

Any charges will be added to your Octopus Energy bill when either paying by Octopus or using your Electric Juice Network card.
Details on other charging network costs will be added as they launch."

I think the question is not whether you're paying a cheaper end price, but is it (for Osprey, for eg)

30p + 20% VAT = 36p, or
34.29p + 5% VAT = 36p

I've had a look at my Octopus bill and it doesn't specify. Domestic electricity is broken down both inc and ex VAT, but the Octopus Juice charges are only shown inc VAT.

30p + 20% VAT = 36p, or

Not sure if I've understood you correctly, but for Osprey the VAT exclusive price is 30p, as per your first line. If you have the app and they bill you monthly, they charge you 31p - strictly it should be 31.5p at a 5% VAT rate, but they obviously want you to use the app.

If you mean does Osprey actually only account for 5% VAT even if you don't use the app, then I wouldn't think so - however unlikely it is that they would have supplied you with more than 1000kwh at the same charger in a month, without monthly billing they have no evidence that they haven't. On the other hand, they don't really have the evidence when they do bill you monthly, as you could have sometimes used the app and sometimes not. The whole thing just looks well dodge to me, but I don't know what advice or clearances they've got. <@55COVER = ON>.

Gridserve are in the process of constructing 2 new solar electric forecourts, the same as the development at Braintree.
