Hud - double vision?

Since today i am the proud owner of an EV6. The car is definitely a step up from my eNiro, if not two...

One thing though. The hud image shows like double. The image becomes sharp when I tilt my head to the left. But that's daft.

Google has taught me it's a known issue but I have not been able to find is there's a fix for it. Anybody here knows anything about this?

First off, congratulations on owning an EV6.

You don't say if this is a new car or second-hand. If the latter, it is possible the previous owner made some adjustments to suit their vision and driving position.

In either case, you can adjust the HUD within the settings.
Depending on whether new or second-hand will determine where you do this as it's in slightly different places within the menu structure.
  • On Gen5W (original EV6) it is via Settings -> Vehicle -> Head-up Display. You can adjust height, rotation, and brightness.
  • On the refreshed EV6 with the newer ccNC, it is via Settings -> Cluster -> Head-up Display. Again you can adjust the same types of settings.

I don't know anything about the EV6 specifically.

I have heard that if the windscreen is replaced then HUD-equipped vehicles require a specific version (something to do with the thickness of the middle layer of the laminated windscreen?). The wrong windscreen can cause a double image. Assuming your vehicle is second-hand can you tell whether the windscreen is original?

The other comment is that certain eye problems can cause double vision that is affected by tilting the head. Are you sure that the same effect isn't present all the time? (I guess one could get accustomed to the effect and compensate for it.)

Do you wear glasses to drive? If they are polarised they don't work so well with windscreen reflected HUD systems.

If you've not made too many changes elsewhere, is this improved if you do a full settings reset within the Infotainment screen? This will put everything back to factory-set values and may mean you're at least starting from a known position for any HUD-related settings.

The other option is to go back to the dealer and sit in another car of the same type to see if the HUD is affected there for you also.
In the past, there have been issues of misaligned HUD hardware which can't be fully mitigated through the settings you can change as the owner from within the menus.
By checking another similar car you can confirm if this problem moves with you or stays with the car. If the latter, the dealer should investigate your HUD for alignment issues.

Just because it's a known problem does not mean you should settle for something that isn't fit for purpose for you.
If it isn't your eyes or glasses, but rather the car, then Kia should fix it. If they have a design failure then again they should fix that. You paid for that feature, so you should expect to be able to use it without having to resort to using one eye and hence immediately losing all sense of depth perception :)

I (hopefully) pick up my new EV6 tomorrow, and if there is anything wrong with it or not working as designed you can be certain I will make them fully aware. The money being spent is more than I paid for my first house, and I'm more than happy to be the most annoying customer in the world to make sure they fix anything and everything they should.

Ok I am pretty certsin it is your vision snd not the HUD causing the issue. I discovered only about 5 yrs ago I have what is called a lazy eye (many Brits will remember school friends who had the pink glasses with an Elastoplast over one lens which was a treatment for it) it means I cannot look over my shoulder without seeing double. It was never much of an issue until I got a car with a HUD and in initially still not one. However as time has passed so seeing double has worsened and I feel it is sure because now my vision focuses on the HUD and I can find signposts etc doubling up. I had some interesting eye training for it but have found avoiding looking at my phone or tablet too long helps alleviate but knowing I have the issue I will simply close one eye where I know it is a problem which is narrow spaces with kerbs so something like say eurotunnel trains! It has got better of late as I have worked to avoid using my phone too much plus also concentrating on focus on distant things, indeed my ophthalmologist working on the eye training suggested a simple exercise of concentrating on a pencil in frant of my nose at a closing distance would help.
So for my money have a chat with an consultant opthalmologist😉

Just to say that from some brief driving in my new EV6, the HUD looked fine.
I have since changed the position to be a little higher on the windscreen, but that hasn't impacted the image quality.

Even though I am short at only 5ft 6" I tend to have the seat in the lowest position and a flat seat base as I find that most comfortable. The HUD, now repositioned, is just above the steering wheel but not in my direct line of sight - it needs to be lower to not get in the way.

Mind you, I drive with glasses as my long-distance sight isn't brilliant. The focal length of those means the HUD is probably right at the boundary of where they kick in.

I am glad yours is OK. Curious as well to hear what you think of the EV6. I've done two days of driving and love the car.

I lowered the seat and adjusted the hud. The display is still far from perfect, but at least it doesn't bother me as much anymore. I do believe the installation of the projector is faulty cause otherwise I can't explain how tilting my head to the left by like 5 degress suddenly brings everything into focus. I will definitely ask the dealer about it, but first they must do the recall actions which they should've done but didn't....
