ID3 and Born Experience

In October last year (2023) I started a lease through my employer salary sacrifice for a V2 Born in Vapor Grey. Love the car. Sadly, a restructure took place so I am moving on which means I have to give the car back.

I was looking to buy a used M3 but a couple of weeks ago a frankly ridiculous deal for a brand new ID3 came up so I decided to opt for that.

I wanted to share my experience and thoughts on the two cars:

Born is the better looking car but the ID3 isn’t far off. I don’t actually miss the Borns HUD or the alcantara effect interior. The sports seats I will miss as they look great but honestly, the ID3 just feels a little better put together inside. It also feels slightly roomier than the Born.

Shockingly the ID3 has no reverse camera which is a joke in this day and age (and price point when looking at the OTR price).

The infotainment system on the ID3, while smaller is much better than the Born. It’s easier to get to your desired options. It’s less buggy and it’s great to just have the fan on without the AC on, the Born forced the AC to stay on even though you could turn it off on the user interface, it made no effect to the range on the GOM or the temperature.

I thought going from a Born to ID3 would leave me reminiscing the good old days but to be honest, apart from the reverse camera, I’m really happy with the ID3.

ID3 appears to be more efficient, the ID3 is on smaller wheels, so this could be it, but the ID3 just feels more responsive. I was able to do a trip from London to Leicester and back in one charge, the Born in similar weather would struggle and I always needed a stopover.

I’m interested in seeing how quickly the ID3 fast charges, hopefully the software for the battery management is better than the Born.

I switched from an ID3 to a Born after 2 years with the ID3. I have to say the opposite - I prefer the Born - looks wise inside and out - build quality is the same IMO- both built on the same line - ID3 feels more spacious I think because of the open space between the front seats - I prefer the closed cosseted set up in the Born. For the same wheel size the economy is the same - driving dynamics- the Born edges it with lowered suspension and better driving feel - however the suspension is a bit harder so the ride is a bit "bumpier" especially on larger wheels- certainly find the infotainment system fine in the Born with the larger more colourful screen- certainly no problem after 3.2 software update. They are both very good EVs - so I think it's down to individual personal preferences after that......... and Yes I am writing on an ID3 forum:)

I wondered about that. The camera is fixed and at a lower height so it surely won’t pick up vehicles coming at right angles from a distance away? I guess if you end up not using it to solely enhance the ability to reverse you could end up forgetting some of the basics.

I think if I had something the size of my old Passat I’d be more inclined to want a camera. Even then the sensors have always been very useful

Not sure which facelift is which but from what I've found, the 2023 update (which is what myself and the OP have) was only the two models and neither had reversing cameras :(. They were part of the Assistance Package option according to the brochure

At the time that facelift came out, you are correct about the spec online, but the majority of cars being sold by dealers were 'launch edition' models, which were never shown on the configurator. It was a bit weird, VW must have just made them as a big batch when they switched to facelift production, but on owner's groups there were far more launch editions than anything else new in the second half of 2023.

ID3 has been on a couple of long trips now - on the way from London to Nottingham, I achieved 4.8mi/kWh keeping the car at 65 using ACC with fan on for the whole journey (AC was on for about an hour). On the way back, I got 4.7mi/kWh. Really happy with those - Cupra Born would struggle to give me 4mo/kWh on the motorway.

For all the criticisms I have of the Borns software (and as folk here know I have many-the latest app update being absolute classic tosh from VW group!!) my experience of the car is that it’s very efficient. Doing 18k miles over the last year mines averaged 4.2kw and that’s with a lot (maybe 60%) of motorway miles at 70 (unless restricted) and I never ever turn off the heating/AC. In warm weather in summer at 65 with ACC on and the A/C off I’d expect to be getting mid to high 4s.

My 2021 ID.3 Pro S has a reversing camera and I love it, I also love the 360/overhead camera, so good for judging parking spots.

My reverse camera came with 2 modes, one mode shows an angle at about 90 degress each side of the car, so you can easily see things coming, also it has sensors that alert you when anything is near.

I'd really miss the cam if I didn't have it, but I'd also miss that 360 view now.
