Hi,

Is there anything on a Nissan Leaf that will identify if a car is 30kWh or 24kWh?

Thanks
Phil

Good spot. Looking at Nissan's site they say the 24kWh uses Carwings and the 30kWh Nissan Connect EV system.
However, from what I can see the physical hard layouts are the same, it's only the screen design that is different, so if the car is turned off they still look identical?

If it's true that the entertainment sytem is different (and only the 30kWh cars have DAB) then a way to tell them apart is a different aerial:

I can't guarantee this is correct though :p

Thought I'd add this here rather than creating a whole new post although perhaps it could use a more descriptive thread title!

I'd noticed when I picked up my 30kWh car that it has a normal looking aerial on the roof, I was expecting the funny shaped one with a blue bit on the end:

Slightly disappointed, as thought it was vaguely unique, but not overly bothered. I presumed this was a cost cutting measure that changed after the Mk2 came out, however it seems as though this is a 2016MY update, since I've noticed most/all LEAFs I've seen since have the above shown aerial design.

Here's one of those stock photos of the 30kWh car, you can see the normal aerial.

Not sure what the point of me sharing this information is now that I've written it!! :p

I once picked up a Leaf as a rental and for the first few hours I was sure that the car was a 30kwh as it was showing 50 miles range on a 50% charge, but then later I realised that the person before me must have driven it really slowly because it started to go down. I looked in the manual and found that it was only 3 weeks old, but nowhere could I find out the battery capacity.

The V5 and a check on an insurance quote website should do the trick.

The nav and entertainment system is different as said before, notably the OK and Cancel buttons on the very first terms and conditions screen are right at the bottom on the new system but float in the middle of the screen on the old system.

Other than that, 30kWh owners are probably much less moany about Ecotricity charging as the bigger battery maintains a faster charge rate for longer.

In regards the brochure I posted, is this the way to tell? Is there a MY16 character in the VIN, and do only 30kWh have it?

web info suggests 10th character is Model Year

B 2011
C 2012
D 2013
E 2014
F 2015
G 2016
H 2017
J 2018
K 2019
L 2020

So.. are there any examples of a 30kWh with anything other than a 'G' in the 10th character, or an example of a very recent 24kWh Leaf with a 'G'?

Dunno yet. I am waiting on folks to say if they have a Leaf VIN inconsistent with the suggestion that 'G' in the 10th character basically says it is 30kWh.

I'd say that was pretty plain and simple!

I am no getting drawn on you Donald!!!
This in not plain n simple that's of course why there is a discution .der.
Thus some sales men don't know !! And some general public just don't know let alone a guy knowing a little about the Nissan leaf.
So unforchanatley guys this is not straight forward shame as now I am having to contact Nissan and ask them why oh why so hard to know the kWh of battery pack now identical car but might not be same battery pack in my honest opinion a different colour badge nice n simple Like dear I say it some thing just like Tesla please !????

The weight plate values on the b pillar behind the driver's door are different.

Cant remember the exact values. off the top of my head but the 30kwh is heavier.

That's a nice neat way of checking.

What do owners have on their chassis plates?

Looking up the reg is fairly reliable, if I look up mine it says:

Leaf Tekna 30kwh

In the vehicle name field.

I'll check chassis plate/door stickers/take a pic of the aerial tomorrow.

edit: just checked a load of "2016 Leaf" reg plates that I could see for sale on eBay on a reg checker (mycarcheck) and almost all were 30kWh (including some that sellers hadn't labelled as such) and the ones that weren't simply said "Leaf Tekna" or "Leaf Acenta".

Also, appears the aerial is a reliable visual check from what I've tried to see on eBay. I suspected what has been outlined above is right, the 24kWh models are old stock being run out? There seem to be very few listed online, if you search 2016 Nissan leaf they're mostly 30kWh.

If that is the case, I wonder what the Sunderland and Japanese battery manufacturing facilities are doing, since as far as I was aware the 30kWh packs were all being produced in the US?

I read this review and it said:-
"In fact, it’s tough to tell them apart after an hour-long examination, because almost nothing you can see has changed. Even if you strip the cars down to expose their underpinnings, you’ll find them pretty much identical.

You might expect the new, higher-capacity battery to be larger than its little brother, but because the engineers have simply increased the cells’ densities, the battery dimensions are unaltered.

If you look very closely, however, you might see the minute modifications. There’s a new aerial on the roof, there’s a new infotainment system inside, and the ConnectEV remote control function has been updated too."

The reddy coloured one is a 2014 24Kwh.
The silvery one os a 2016 Kwh

Looks like looking for the slight difference in weight info is the best way.

The 30 Kwh has a kerb weight of 1516 Kg
So the 24Kwh should be about 1477 Kg

Henry.

The aerial is a red herring. Have seen 24kwh cars with the newer style aerial.

Picture of 30kwh plate below. Haven't got a 24kwh car with me to get a picture.

The aerial is a weird one, every 16 plate non-30kWh car I've seen on eBay has a stubby aerial, although not the early one with the blue bit, but still a stubby aerial, vs the DAB aerial on the 30kWh which is tall and more "old fashioned" as it were.

I guess they're clearing through old stock...

Nissan Leaf 30kWh Tekna

"Where Silverstone; On sale Now; Price £21,490 (plus £70 per month battery leasing) or £26,490 (after £5000 government subsidy); Engine Electric motor; Power107bhp at 3000-10,000rpm; Torque 187lb ft at 0-3000rpm; Gearbox single-ratio ‘reducer’; Kerb weight 1516 kg; 0-62mph 11.5sec; Top speed 90mph Range155 miles; CO2 0g/km"

As I mentioned above in an earlier mail "So the 24Kwh should be about 1477 Kg".
I don't know how that relates to your car label Mike?

Need the max weight. This is what shows on the chassis plate.

Maybe worth mentioning if they are Acenta or Tekna, in case we spot a difference there too.
