Interrupting charging?

Collected vhe Niro (level 4 EV) last Friday, done a few miles in it, and still learning, but have a few things to think about.

I charged it up last night, on my new home charger, and had an emergency call out which meant I tried to remove the charging plug from the car (we have a tethered home charger), but couldn't get it to unlatch. I tried both "lock" features in the EV menu, but neither released the plug, so I left it on the unlock when charging finished option.

In the end I used the wife's ICE Hyundai, and when I got back the charging had finished so was able to remove the plug.

Question is how to releaase plug if charging isn't up to max allowed?

Exactly this. Take the fob with you to the charging connector (just to save time so you don’t miss it) then press fob unlock button. You will hear the charge socket whirr and click as it releases the connector lock. The actual charging current is reduced from 32A to a very low value. Pull the plug out without any delay else it will soon lock again and resume charging at full current.

Further information for interest……To enable safe unplugging (even while it is still live) the CP signal pin is deliberately shorter by design than the bigger AC power pins. Due to this it becomes disconnected before the ac power pins do as the plug is being withdrawn. This tells the wall charger to instantly disconnect the AC mains power from the charging cable. So the charging plug and cable becomes completely dead even before it is fully withdrawn from the car. This avoids any possibility of arcing or shock hazard. You will hear the clunk from the wall box as it disconnects the power as you pull the charge plug away from the car. Peter

If you have "EV->Settings->Charging connector locking mode" set to "Always locked" you can only remove the cable within 15 seconds of unlocking the car. See pages 1.19 and 1.20 in the manual.

If you have this set to "Lock while charging", you should stop the charge before you remove the cable. Unlocking the car will still give you 15 seconds to remove the cable though if you just want to interrupt the charging (it won't break anything doing this).

The only way you can just pull the cable is to have this setting on "Do not lock", which is perfectly safe with AC charging as the CCS connector will short the input supply as you remove the cable, so it shouldn't even arc.

Personally, I leave mine set to "Lock while charging" and obviously the car is locked when I'm away from it or doing an overnight charge.
If I have to stop the charge because I need to use the car, I tend to stop this on my Zappi EVSE (either on the unit itself or via the App) as that is the cleanest way and indeed the quickest rather than messing about within the Infotainment screen in the car.

It's amazing how dealers explain to you that in order to see the vanity mirror you need to flip the sun visor down and very importantly, slide away the latch that covers it and oooh, now you can see yourself and even turn on a little light there, see, so you can spot that little spec of tomato sauce in your eyebrow.

About how to charge and end charging and trivial stuff like that, just RTFM....
