You can set the brightness level. It can also automatically adjust itself to the ambient lighting.

 

As mentioned, the ‘Auto’ setting is pretty good. I’ve never thought it was too bright whilst driving. The only think I’m not too keen on is when it changes from dark mode to daytime mode. There’s no smooth transition between the two. Just flicks to the appropriate mode, which has distracted me on a couple of occasions.

 

On a dark road at night I often find the screen a bit too bright. The auto brightness setting leaves the screen at around 10% brightness, I slide it down to around 5%. Switching from satellite view to map view also helps.

 

After you dial the brightness down, the next day you might find the screen to dim during daytime. Turn off auto brightness, slide the brightness up or down and turn on auto brightness again.

 

You could create yourself a day and a night driver profile with the settings you want.

 

I am someone who tends to turn dashboard lighting down to have best visibility outside the car when driving at night.

I find the 3 to be fine at night, with the screen set to "auto". It typically sets to 5% for me (not sure why different to Paulo).

The screen has a good contrast level with quite deep blacks - it doesn't have significant backlight bleed add the dark colours of night mode are effective.

Something quite significant about the model 3 at night is that there are no other light sources - no illuminated instrument cluster directly in front of you and no other significant cabin illuminations (e.g. Panels of illuminated buttons, footwell lighting, "ambient" lighting (can not understand this myself, but as I said, im someone that likes the cabin dark dark when driving at night)), which is good. The screen is basically the only light source in the car at night.

Maybe it has a default auto setting and you can leave it in auto and slide it up or down a bit so it's on auto plus or minus your bias.

 

At night it turns into dark mode, there is auto brightness which seems to work well for me, can't say i've ever found it too bright, but you can always adjust manually if you need to.
