from those who have bought or are considering buying the new Golf GTE 8.5, does anyone know what charging socket it has. Is it type 2 or CCS2 ? I can't find any detail on the rather woeful volkswagen.co.uk site. Thanks in advance

Thanks, @Zero1 that is what I saw as well on the VW site but the local VW dealer showed me a new Passat hybrid which had a CCS2 socket and said the new GTE has the same. Given that the blurb about the new GTE on the VW site says the car is "....now equipped with DC quick-charging at up to 40 kW. " one would assume that it has a CCS2 socket but there is no confirmation of this and I can't find a detailed specification document or any pictures of the socket.

The vw site spec contains this phrase.

The onboard battery for Golf Style eHybrid and Golf GTE is now capable of AC charging at a rate of 11 kW (previously 3.6 kW) Charge time AC 11 KW 0% - to 100% in as little as 2.5 hours using a 11kW charger and now equipped with DC quick-charging at up to 40 kW.

That reads as a faster ac type2, hopefully 7kW in the UK and the ccs addon. So it's CCS2 a slow version, but the battery is small so would not support 100kW charging.

That makes sense @Spiny a slow CCS2. I ask because it is so difficult to find Type2 charging points on the UK motorway network

Look carefully at the port in this image it's deeper and appears to have the CCS contacts with a rubber cover over them Zoom in 😃

Thanks @Spiny I can see the cover, it is a much better image than I could find on the VW site. It is woeful that the people working in my local VW dealerships have been unable to answer this question. Even VW Uk Customer services said it was a type 2 socket without saying that it could become a CCS2 !

If it's 40kW DC it has to be CCS2.

The current versions of that platform are all Type 2 AC only.

New versions (that have either just come out or are out imminently) are CCS2 and support 40kW DC.

Should have a 40-50 mile real world range as well so pretty useful (my current gen car is 20-25 real world and I still manage a massive proportion of driving in EV mode).

However I wouldn't bother charging a PHEV on the motorway as it will almost certainly be more expensive than running on petrol.
