Hi guys

Not sure if this is common knowledge - I couldn't find the pricing anywhere but after a lot of back and forth with Nissan 'customer services' they sent me the following pricing information:

According to the recent information found in brochures for UK customers, for example, after the remote service's free subscription period ends: £0.99/month (Smart Alerts), £1.99/month (Remote Control Services), and £2.99/month (Maps & Live Traffic)
b. Please note, however, though these prices can be subject to change in the future.
c. However, when customers must pay to use remote features after the free period ends, the current prices set for any of these subscription packages will appear in the "Nissan Store" part of the app.

I've copied this directly from the email I received after a week of asking the question over and over so hopefully will save someone the hassle of having to chase them again for the information.

Hope this helps someone!

Mike 😉

When does the 3 year period start and end?
My 2018 40kWh Leaf is coming up for five years old now. I have never paid a penny for Nissan Connect and it still works fine (remote checking of charge level, starting of climate control, sending routes to SatNav etc.). Is it only the later Leafs (those without an SD card) that have a subscription service for Nissan Connect?

I would pay the £1.99/month for Remote Control Services, as it has that value to me, but not the other subscriptions.

But, I would kind of resent it, because it's nickle-and-diming me for something that costs them very little after I spent a lot of money with them for the car.

I have a way to go before the free 3 year period ends. Hopefully, the charges will not be enforced.

I'm researching about a second hand Leaf 40 at the moment. Due to ever dropping second hand prices of these cars and nice to have a bigger battery for V2H. Our Leaf 24 with Carwings never had any monthly cost. If it were to cost £1.99 to get remote climate control it would be an unnecessary downgrade for us.

So are 2019 or later cars with slightly bigger center screen, without SD card slot, the one to avoid?

The early 40kWh models, like mine, first sold in 2018, have an SD card for the SatNav and other data. It does not require a subscription to anything but you have to buy a new SD card to get updates to the SatNav data. My understanding is that later models have no SD card but rely on a subscription to over-the-air updates. I have a Nissan Connect account that lets me use the PC and phone versions of the app to check battery SOC, plot new routes and send those to the car's SatNav, and to schedule the climate control. There is no cost for that service.

Yes, it is reading like the ones with SD card slots are the ones to get, in order to avoid any on-going monthly costs. Thanks for that handy picture.

With Carplay/Android Auto, outdated in-car map really is no problem at all.

It would suck big time having to pay a monthly cost on such a bad service while I don't need to pay anything to Tesla for a much more usable service.

Hopefully this is car dependent rather than dependent on when the user starts their ownership of second hand cars (you are 5 years old owner, I'm 6 years old owner)

I too have just received the Nissan Connect Services advance warning about free period expiring in the next few weeks. I don't know how they work out the expiry date as the car was first registered in July 2019, and I purchased it as a showroom demo with zero milage in September 21. I have the non SD card version. What happens if one does not pay, what stops working... traffic updates, weather etc or will I be unable to turn on climate/heater remotely, monitor charging. Any idea of the cost in France for renewal. As the map or software has never been updated and I cannot get any response from Nissan France I just wonder what will happen.

I've also received an email telling me that my subscription for NissanConnect Services is coming to an end but it went on to say "At this time, you can continue to use the services of your NissanConnect Services package until its expiration date. You can see your expiration date within the app by selecting your Nissan Store icon and selecting each service". I did just that to find that my subscription for remote control services ends on 09/04/023 as does maps & live traffic but Battery manager and Driving History & analysis don't end until 06/02/27.

I never use r/c services anyway and maps & live traffic are pretty useless without an occasional update which hasn't happened for me since approx April 2020 (and road info seems to be a couple of years older than that anyway) so I'd use Google via Android Auto if I need the facility.

So, no need to worry for another four years !(y)

But the renewal dates are rather odd ! 6th Feb was purchase date so last two items seem to have a 7 year life but first two seem to be three years two months and three days. I'm sure there must be some logic but it escapes me,

Hint: to get this info you need to tap the shopping-cart at the top right of Nissan Connect, then click Manage on each of the services.

Results similar here. Leaf 40kWh , registered Jul 2019, bought as ex-demo Oct 2019. Battery manager and Driving history run to Jul 2026, looks like 7 years from registration. But Maps/Live Traffic and Remote Control services expire 04/04/2023 which is 3yr 6mo from purchase, 3y 9 mo from registration, no obvious logic to that.

Unfortunately it looks like remote-climate control comes under Remote Control , and I like that so will probably pay...

So the "basic" functionality of checking battery level and preconditioning is 7 years from date of purchase. I wonder if this also applies to second hand purchases or from vehicle first registration.

My understanding from what I’ve read is that it’s 3 years complimentary on the services, however there’s been an issue where the in built nav cannot be updated over the air for at least 2 years.

That’s recently been fixed, and I’ve seen on an owners group that Nissan have sent out a bulletin saying they’ll start charging from the 1st April.

It looks like they seem to have extended everyone who was due to have their 3 year free period to at least that date causing the weird 3 year and x months free period. Guessing it’s because the billing system wasn’t ready til then.

Also interestingly there was a YouTube video I was watching the other day where they were saying they wanted to move away from the tech provided by the alliance with Renaut and wonder if this is the first step towards that?

Looks like I got a good deal with my second-hand 2018 Leaf 40. I have never paid anything for the Nissan Connect services, and it looks as though they will survive at least to 2028. The only downside to having the older SD card model is that I have to buy a new SD card at about £100 a go if I want the latest maps.

The next question is how will we pay, will it be by DD or credit card and monthly or annually? Will Smart Alerts be one charge, Remote control another charge, and Maps etc a further charge.

I have tried to day to update system and also map without any success, if I can't update the map there's no point in paying for the Map, which is a shame as I use both weather and traffic alerts quite often. Maybe a map update will be available before pay up time.

#15 ·
Sorry for the Ignorance, I haven’t really being paying attention. My Leaf e+ will be 3 years old in June. What exactly disappears after 3 years if you don’t start paying?

I almost never use the in built satnav (preferring Google Maps via the phone) but do use the Nissan Connect app to check on charge % and sometimes preheat. Is this affected? Thanks.

I had an email from NISSAN which stated my complimentary subscription was coming to an end and that I would have to pay for my subscription going forward. To be honest I didn't Know I was subscribed complimentary or otherwise

Any way they (NISSAN) suggested that I fire up the APP on my phone and visit the store (Click on to the Trolley Icon top right of the screen).

Apparently there are 4 subscription areas - the first 2 are under Navigation and Driving:

Driving History & Analysis - This is getting information about your vehicle journey - Driving History, Daily - Weekly - Monthly - Yearly - number of trips - Distance vehicle has travelled - time behind the wheel etc

Subscription valid for 8 years (same as Battery warranty) expires 10/02/2027

Maps and Live Traffic - Live Premium Traffic - map up dates - GOOGLE on line search - Weather - My car Finder - Plug in Reminder - expires 10/04/2023

1 under Battery Management

Be in control of Battery Charging - Remotely start your EV charging - remotely check state of charge - check estimated range - (same as Battery warranty) expires 10/02/2027

1 under remote control services

Remote Climate Control - remote horn and lights (find your car when you have lost it in a crowd) - expires 10/04/2023

It doesn't say how much the subscription is but I won't be bothering - even if the maps are updated, they are always a couple of years behind, in fact the maps are pathetic and I don't think I have had any traffic up dates ever.

I hardly ever use the remote climate control - I try to avoid crowds :ROFLMAO:

That's really strange : mine expires 6/2/27 which is exactly seven years since purchase !

The only bit of Maps and Live Traffic I'd miss is "Car Finder" but it's really not worth paying a monthly subscription for.

'Battery manager' has been quite useful when I've been sat in a bar or café wanting to know how a charge is going but it's not very often used and most rapid charger apps will let you know how much has been added (and if they don't also give % of battery I'm confident of working it out for myself). Not sure why else you'd ever want to check estimated range & battery level remotely ! I'd try and look at dashboard before leaving charger :)

Early yesterday, I received an email from Nissan saying "We can confirm that your request to either remove your connected car or to unsubscribe from at least one of your account's services, has been received." However, I sent no such email !

However, it also quotes that the only services to which I've 'unsubscribed' are Maps & Live Traffic and Remote Control Services. I think the Maps & Live Traffic just means I won't be able to have an OTA map update - but since I've managed without one for 3 years I shan't miss it !

'vehicle location' is still working but I imagine that's part of 'Driving history & analysis' to which I'm apparently still subscribed until 06/02/2027 so I don't need to panic just yet. Likewise 'Battery manager' so I should still be able to sit and check charging progress whilst I have a drink/meal for another 4 years.

Really not sure exactly what I'd get by subscribing to Maps & Live Traffic and Remote Control Services but I am sure that it's not worth £4.98 per month.

I complained to Nissan customer service about the fact that noone told me when I was buying the car from the Nissan dealership that I was only getting 3 years of access to some of the car functionality. Their response was that the dealership should have told me and sorry for the inconvenience... Surely that is misrepresentation. Three years after buying something they tell me I didn't actually buy it but only had it for 3 years... Did anyone get told they would lose some functions after a period of time?

... Did anyone get told they would lose some functions after a period of time?
Did anyone get told that the maps were already 2 years out of date when you left the dealer's or that the OTA updates would never work ?

Before I bought this vehicle, I did due diligence, to ensure that the vehicle was suitable to meet my needs, I did this by having a test drive, but all the relevant facts and figures came for the 2019 / 2020 NISSAN LEAF Brochure.

I have a PDF copy of this Brochure and it relays the virtue of having remote services via the NISSAN CONNECT APP, these included remote heating and cooling (quite important to many). However there is no mention what so ever (either large or small print) that these integral functions are subscription based and after 3 years the customer will be liable for an ongoing subscription to maintain these services.

The NISSAN CONNECT Manual that came with the vehicle, makes no mention of subscription services.

In 3 years I have never been offered a map update that means that the map is at least 5 years out of date, you can't tell me that TOM TOM have not had an up date for their customers in the last 5 years. I used to have a stand alone TOM TOM and used to get regular free updates via Broadband.

Even if you take this subscription on, then there is no Guarantee of a Map Update and then if there is an update; how out of date will that update be?.

I am very disgruntled with NISSAN penny pinching and doubt very much that NISSAN will retain me as a future customer.

I kept my copy of the 2021 brochure, and this does mention the subscriptions, in quite small writing on page 10.

If it really isn't in the earlier brochure, then they changed it at that point, presumably because someone figured out it was a potentially problematic omission.

One mistake they still made in the 2021 brochure is that they gave the subscription pricing, without any text allowing price increases.

#27 ·
I can confirm the latest software update fixes the OTA and USB map update issue as I had an outstanding ticket open with Nissan for about 16 months about it and have now updated to the latest TomTom maps via USB. It’s not a service I think I’d pay a monthly fee for.

In terms of the rest of the post, can’t really comment. I know the 3 years was mentioned on the website before I bought but I couldn’t say if it was on any other docs.

I bought my 40kW Leaf new on 30th January 2020 and we passed the three year mark a few months ago but I did get a couple of emails telling me some features would require payment soon and to wait for an email telling me costs etc. Then I just lost the remote controls (heating, cooling, light flashing and hooting) and car location/maps features a week or so ago.

A recent update of the App added the basket at the top right which showed that my subscription for driving history and battery manager continue to run until the end of January 2027 but that I would need to pay for Maps & Live Traffic and Remote Control Services.

I decided I would still like to see live traffic and to check the car's location so clicked to pay for Maps & Live Traffic and basically the only thing that worked was making the payment itself. I've contacted Nissan Customer Services and they asked me to check for car and App software updates but both were up to date.

Anyone else having this problem?

Paul

If it makes you feel better Nissan drivers, Peugeot/Stellantis have done exactly the same with their app and I only recently found out useful services such as live traffic information and preconditioning ends 3 and 10 years after registration apparently. Of course the dealer didn't mention it.

The other dodgy thing about the Peugeot app is that it has an electronic log book that can only be updated by a Peugeot dealer - do Nissan pull that trick? Peugeot do a paper log book, but the dealer told me 'it's all online now, no paper log book'. I complained in the end and got a paper log book so independent garages can service my vehicle.

The area of car subscriptions and apps feels like a regulation loophole that the manufacturers are using to farm/fleece customers.

I managed to update the maps via USB following the nav unit software update a month or so ago - that worked fine. My problem now is reactivating Maps & Live Traffic following payment of the new monthly subscription. I can't see live traffic on the car display and the map icon on the App is greyed-out so I can't see the car's location.

Thinking back to when I first got the car, it was a right hassle to get the App and car connected but it's been fine since. Now I am paying £2.99 a month for the privilege, I expect it to at least work as well as it did before Nissan decided to start charging.

I've now had back a second dismissive email from the Nissan customer service department to my complaint that noone told me it would be a paid for subscription. This said that they understand that times are challenging for their customers and that their charges are competitive - completely ignoring my complaint.
So I've highlighted the fact that the brochure of the time states that the car temperature can be controlled remotely and the vehicle located using the app - withh NO mention of it being by a subsciption at all. I've said if they don't re-enable the functionality I'll take it to the small claims court for mis-selling. The Subscription cost for these features times the expected life of the car should work out to be a reasonable amount.
I encourage everyone else as hacked off as I am over this to make a complaint to Nissan. Just Google Nissan + UK + complaint for the form to fill in.

I contacted Nissan customer services with the following reply
Thank you for contacting Nissan Customer Services.

The features which you have mentioned were free for the introductory period of the vehicle’s ownership as communicated in the terms and conditions. For this reason, you must subscribe if your vehicle's introductory period has ended.

The introduction of the subscription fees will support Nissan’s ongoing efforts to enhance the functionality and performance of these features while working to introduce new services in the future for the benefit of our customers.

Please feel free to contact us using the details below if you have any queries.

Kind regards,

The subscription cost is actually quite reasonable compared to the £120 for a new SD card to get a map update on the 2018 models. Think that has been withdrawn now. I bought my 2018 Accenta in August last year and when customer services set up my Nissan connect I asked what the cost was as was told it was free for 3 years. Now does a new owner get the first 3 years free or did the previous owners not set up Nissan connect, I don't know. My 2020 Ioniq came with 5 years connectivity and map updates therefore the life of the warranty.

I keep getting these reminders that I haven't renewed my subscription - they can take 2 fingers as far as I am concerned, it's a matter of principle - the 2019 and 2020 brochures (I have PDF copies) make no mention of subscription charges and neither does the Connect Manual that came with the car.

They are denying me access the facilities that came free with the car and that I paid for at the time of purchasing.

Especially as they wouldn't work half the time anyway!

I can see another class action, here - SUBS-GATE

Update on my subscription to NissanConnect.

My Leaf e+ was 3 years old yesterday and in the last couple of weeks I've had two emails from Nissan saying that the free subscription was soon to end but that I'd be sent a 'prompt to renew' email. I didn't receive one but at 0500 this morning I did get an email to say that they were 'sorry to see me go' as I had 'requested to unsubscribe'. Err, no I hadn't.

So after a few expletives I simply went back into the app (which was looking quite bare), clicked on the shopping basket and then subscribed to Remote Control Services for £1.99 a month. I haven't renewed Maps & Live Traffic. It was a simple enough process of giving my payment details and I've just checked that the remote services (flashing headlights) do work.

So, if like me you don't get a prompt to renew, all is not lost. Just renew on the app.
