The dip beam operates by a mechanical shutter coming down to clip the beam, hence the 0.5 sec delay when you dip . My guess is this is what you're hearing.

Thanks @HandyAndy , I thought I was going crackers on the drive home tonight thinking I was hearing a clunk when I flashed the headlights - I'd just written it down to paranoia on my part & hey presto! Rather then investigate further I ended up taking the Tommy Cooper answer to it & stopped doing it - I can see I need to change my ways to get any kind of street cred among you lot!
