Quick fixes for when the myOpel app fails to connect or send commands?

The myOpel app for Android is rubbish. It fails more than it succeeds in sending commands to the car, logs me out half the times I open the app, fail at connecting, etc. It has not improved in the six months I have owned the car, maybe even gotten worse, and from the reviews in the same time period (can only see Norwegian ones), it seems as if 1 or 2 stars is all that people are willing to give it in the Google Play store.

Do any of you have any tips on getting it to suck less? Does it make sense to clear the cache and try to reconnect it? That procedure seems to involve 20 minutes of driving or so ...

P.S. If any of you know of any type of bug tracker or public forum the developers are actively monitoring, let me know :)

I've only used the iPhone app, and it isn't much better. When my Corsa arrives next week, I'll set up the Android app and see how it goes. I'm not expecting much. I barely use the app anyway, I just used it to set up scheduled preconditioning, which is working perfectly, and ignore it otherwise. It doesn't do much, so why use it?

What's the mobile signal like? It doesn't connect directly to the car, the phone and the car both connect to the Stellantis servers, which are poor at best, but both the car and phone need decent connectivity. I'm not sure what network the car uses, but it may be different from your phone, so just because the phone is OK doesn't mean the car is.

Perfect. This is central Oslo and the base towers for 4G and 5G are 100 m away. It is not like it physically does not connect to the car computer: I get some readings, such as the "Currently charging" status, but other data (such as the percentage charged) fails to update even if trying to update several times in a row. I do not see any consistent behavior in when or what makes it update these data.

Also, a failing command (a network call, such as "Start warming the car now") will often result in me being directly logged out of the app. That is just poor error handling in the programming.

Really? I set the times inside using the menu. Then plug in wait for charging to commence ( 50 seconds or so) then press the button right next to the socket.

Whilst charging it flashes green then when you press that button it goes into wait mode and turns blue.
Without that green/ blue button just the menu alone does nothing. This method has NEVER failed in three years.

Does that help you at all?

Aaah I haven't done it in that order I will try that thank you. I will let you know.

Although teaching my elderly mother a new way to charge the car is a bit daunting 😅

Yep that sounds right.

Keep car on, set time on dash.
Turn car off.
Get out walk to the charge port.
Plug it in.
lock car.
Car begins to charge immediately.
Button is flashing green.
Press the button next to the socket and it lights up blue.
Walk away.

Come the desired time it charges.

It'll remember the times so that part only needs to be done infrequently.

Glad it worked for you.

Just brilliant I cannot believe it was so easy after struggling with the app for over three years. I couldn't even find a set of directions or a video showing me how to do it !

I'll experiment with needing to lock it first or having to set the time every charge too.

Muchos thanks. This information needs to be clearer to users! (Or just people like me... Even though I have a tech degree... Just goes to show!)

I agree myOpel is far from a usable application. But, I have managed to learn a few things about the backend. Most Stellantis EVs and PHEVs made 20NN - 2023 have a 3G/2G module for remote connectivity. No 4G or 5G. Since 3G networks mostly removed, getting a connection to the car is very difficult. Opel changed the timeout after I complained to them (cac@opel.com), but they admit the backend systems are far from high available or enough capacity. I have not managed to connect for a few days.
The good thing is that you can do most things in the car (like stated here), but starting heating or cooling manually not. I requested this function but evidently the car OS does not support it.

Not going to believe this. Opel called me today. I found the email of their office in my country and I must have said enough for them to actually call me and ask me details of what was going wrong with the car and the app 😲
I explained my issues and then told them to go look on EV forums for more feedback on their product 🤣
They did say the app updated every 2 weeks which doesn't sound right at all but who knows, maybe it will improve 🤷🏾‍♀️

That's because it also covers ICE cars, it's the same for the Citroen app, they did a cheap job and tried to bolt on EV functions, when you see what the updates are for they are nothing to do with Ev function.

Their cars are the same, available with fossil engines too. The original Corsa e still had the gear stick from the petrol automatic, though it’s now been replaced with a switch. My van still needs the key to be turned to switch it on, and has blanked off cutouts for the diesel and adblu fillers. There’s loads of space under the bonnet, but no frunk. The state of charge is shown with an 8-segment dial, same as the fossil fuel level, and you can’t see the percentage remaining without diving into the energy screen.

I tried the following with no better result.
Removed Cache and Data for the app.
Signed out & removed app.
Re-installed app and went back to the car to reconnect phone to car after signing back in.
Car status is updated by car at the times it wants. No remote commands or status requests work.
The issue is on the Stellantis IT systems, probably a database issue.
I have contacted, guided, supported and helped in every way possible but at the moment looks like no-one at Stellantis cares.

Does anybody have any understanding how the connection between the car and app works? The app connects to somekind of Opel Connect server I assume. But how does the data from the car get to the server? Which connection is used.

For example at work, when I am in the office and car is charging in the parking garage, the MyOpel app is not able to show me the correct battery status. It just shows the most recent status when I left the car.

Yesterday I managed to use the delayed charging but I still don't understand how I managed to make it work. Multiple times sending the command failed but at some point it got sent and it worked. Would be good to know why it worked to be able to ensure the success next time :D
