Renault Zoe ZE.5 2020 - riddled with issues, had enough of it. The investigation bill is last straw

Hi All,

We bought it on impulse, in desperation and in peak lock down, didn't even test drive the new Zoe (2020) as they didn't have them!
After a 7 month wait, right from the outset the car was not worth the cost, we had lots of niggles, apart from the higher range, we much preferred our 2016 Zoe..

I honestly hope that you're all having a better experience than us with your Zoes, and with Renault, Hendy, Mobilize, RCI Finance....
We've just accepted the issues and the poor customer experience as part of the package and will make sure we never have to deal with this lot again.
We got our fingers burnt early on with being charged hundreds for investigation that ultimately lead to them saying that we're making the issues up,
That was for leaking front door seals(water ingress), and creaking on moving off or braking.

Since then we've had loads of issues, not going to bore you with all of them, but here's a few:

Sat nav map at random times zooms out of earth..lol, love that one, especially when we're lost (update didn't fix). but it's nothing major
Front parking sensors stopped working, (not off on infotainment)
Speed limit camera stopped working (they fixed that one, yay!)
Dash/infotainment auto dim, insisting it's night even on bright mornings, dangerous as can't see the dash
Strange knocking sound turning corners
Ongoing creaks, just part of the Zoe experience
Intermittent charging issues, seems to dislike 22kWh charge points
etc etc

But recently the big ones we just could not just accept any longer and got it booked in for investigation:

Steering wheel juddering at > 20 mph
Accelerator has gotten stuck on a few occasions, usually joining motorway ! yes absolutely frightening and we are frightened to ever use full acceleration
And a massive boot leak during all the the heavy rain we had in UK, but it had gathered in the tyre inflation kit well and carpet was sodden

Hendy found nothing after diagnostics and we got lumped with a bill of hundreds of pounds for their investigation. Paid to have the car returned with the issues (that according to them we've obviously imagined). What do you guys think of the process of paying for this kind of diagnostic work for a vehicle under warranty ? £180 per hour + VAT.

So I hope you can feel my frustration with the whole affair, and maybe there are others that have had similar issues, I've read a few on here but I think ours was a different class of lemon all together. So only option left is to work on retuning the car as soon as possible,

Apologies for the rant.😡😩

Thanks for reading

I sympathise with you, ran a Zoe for 3 years and had a myriad of problems, best summed up as some things worked some of the time, but everything NEVER worked all of the time - too many issues to mention, a lot of which were minor annoyances rather than big issues. It all culminated in the motor completely failing after 50,000 miles, and the car coming coming to a quick stop - minutes from the motorway! It was repaired under warranty but i never drove it again and quickly moved on to an i3, where it just all works…….hope you also move on soon!

@cloud45

The leaking door seal is a well known issue. Hendy are clearly crap. Find another Renault dealer, many are just incompetent.

Stuck pedal might be something dumb like a carpet ruck or the pedal is adjusted incorrectly and shouldn't go as far down as it does.

I'd probably start a formal complaint as you can't imagine a pool of water in the boot. Technicans are also often half deaf and rarely hear bangs or rattles. You want independently recorded sound of it so they can't pretend it's not there.

I'd also add that you should contact Renault Customer Services. For me they were always sympathetic and prepared to listen to the problems with 'Titanic'

Yep I always keep slightly higher tyre pressure, so it's not that. Hendy did actually find something, not entirely sure what as I was so angry about the cost that I didn't listen. Anyway they said we'd need to book it in again and that it won't be covered under warranty. I felt like Michael Douglas in Falling Down at that point.

Just seen this thread:
The accelerator pedal getting jammed is certainly nothing to do with carpet or mats, Hendy also said that it might be this.
It's intermittent and absolutely frightening when it happens, hard brake and needs a few presses to become unstuck. has usually happened when joining motorway.
This is the main reason we cannot keep with this car.

There is nothing worse than when a car does not deliver. They are expensive and an essential in most people’s life’s for me no car is a truly difficult situation.
Then when the relationship with the garage is not as it should be the frustration mounts. After reading a lot of the posts here I am not even going to entertain test driving a Renault they seem too flaky in a lot of areas. I am also wary of any of the Stelliantos although the current Peugeots are very popular and I saw an e2008 this afternoon that made me look.
You have my sympathy my very first brand new car leaked like a sieve and it took the Ford garage (it was a B plate Fiesta) over a year to eventually trace the problem to a spot weld on the roof gutter at the rear of the car. It was such a disappointmen. A second car was delivered with such a poor lacquer coat that Ford did agree to respray it……it was not until I got my first German car, a VW Passat that the new cars actually had no problems on delivery (the Passat did break down on me with the known electrical fault to the TSI injection system though! ) and since then Audi and Mercedes have been ok.The c class had a well known issue crop up with the ancillary battery for the stop start system which needed replacement at 30mths but other wise they have been the best all round.
You are justified to feel angry and if it were me I would move on. still not convinced on the Koreans though either as they seem to have the recurring 12v battery issue and other niggles but they do look a better bet than Renault (sad to say as a Demi Frenchie😂)

Hiya
Thank you for this
Sounds like the dealer is crap… we’ve had good service generally. A lot of thumps when turning the wheel are the suspension bushes needing some lube. Common issue on a few Renaults, that might be one of your noises.
Thanks, yes they certainly are crap.
if it is simply lube that’s required should it not be the garage that sorts it, but instead they supposedly do diagnostics charge us £180 per issue investigation and if they find an issue tell us it’s not covered under warranty. If anyone out there has Pcp financed Zoe, under warranty. Is this standard to be charged this way and have you seen paperwork that stipulates (t&c) repair items that are not covered under warranty.
So far they’ve only repaired the speed limit camera under it, rest of our issues they charge us and don’t repair

Hi there, sorry to hear about this. Could you let me know what area you are in please? I work for Hevra tech support and we might be able to offer some free diagnostics - we basically spend our time working out car faults to help Hevra garages fix them and we are always keen on faults on newer models as otherwise we get really busy when a popular model comes out of warranty as thats when the cars end up at Hevra garages.

If we could prove where some of the faults are then it might help you press Renault to get them fixed. Feel free to PM me.

Thanks.

Is this a Hendy’s issue and should it be referred to Trading standards as it sounds to be entirely wrong to charge for investigation work on a car under warranty. It sounds like a very malignant practice designed to catch the unwary.
Do Renault or any of the manufacturers Hendy sell have anything in their service booklets about making warranty claims. From memory Mercedes say they via their agreed repairer will investigate and repair at no cost if it falls under the warranty which here is only 2 yrs.

They all do it. If they find nothing they charge you. If they find something the warranty pays for the investigation cost. I complained to vauxhall about this and they often issue a 'free' investigation voucher which is useful as their dealers often can't find a fault if it came up and slapped them across the face.

I had the same argument with Renault. I wasn't charged any time as they did actually manage to find issues I'd reported and the supplying dealer wasn't a total muppet either.

It's a shameful practice and should be stopped.

I have offered lots of warnings about getting a ZE50.

I usually get 'cancelled' for saying them.

Some people believe the hype others offer that they are OK cars, no worse than others, then regret it.

Welcome to the ex-ZE50 owner's club.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that are satisfied with their Zoe, Renault, Hendy (Dealership) experience, but there are a handful of us that paid the same money (is a lot considering how cheap they feel) and have had nothing but a constant source stress in our lives instead.

I shall be joining the exZE50 owners club very soon and couldn't come sooner.

in fairness. Hendy sold me a brand new ZE40 with the steering so bad. streering was pointing at 1 o oclock going on a straight line and vibrated. had to pay 3rd party cuz no renault dealer would fix it (quik fit managed to do it in 10 min what renault couldnt do in 10 months, by the time i fixed it, i needed 4 new tyres because they were getting chewed in the corners.)

Just disgraceful, seems a fairly common concern that Hendy sell you EV vehicles they don't fully understand how to maintain and resolve issues on
Never again will go to Renault or Hendy

I had the leaky door seal, the world view sat nav, the nighttime view in broad daylight, the juddering steering wheel.
It took the dealer to partially fix the seal, the world view continues as does the night view. No cure for that apparently.
Juddering steering cured with a new set of tyres - the original were misshapen and separating.
Boot creaking also cured by dealer as was the non functioning preconditioning.
You were not imagining the issues. I would demand the investigation fee back as these issues have been reported by many others

All of the dealers charge an investigation fee if they can't charge it back to Renault under warranty. It is across the whole industry. Their argument is they are checking if the fault exists, and if it is due to wear and tear or faulty initial vehicle. If faulty initial vehicle then that is covered by your statutory rights & warranty. Internally they then charge the investigation fee back to Renault's warranty financier. If not, their time still needs paid for.
