They’re copping flack on socials as it’s 0-60 time makes it the slowest Tesla ever. Elon did famously say “…at Tesla we don’t build slow cars”. We now you do 🤣

Carry on anyway 😀
I think Tesla has "redefined" what a fast car is. A Tesla Model Y RWD is still Sub 7 seconds @ 6.6 seconds 0-60mph.

That will still be faster that most ICE fast hot hatches made today costing the same money or less.

This is not accurate and Tesla has not redefined what a fast car is. Or do you forget all those chavy Subaru Impreza Turbos flying about in the noughties?

As for current hot hatches being slower and more expensive than a Model Y. Note this is about your claim on performance, not in practicality or running costs etc.

The Escort ST is 5.7 seconds 0-60 performance and costs considerably less than a Model Y RWD

The Golf GTI is 6.3 seconds and considerably cheaper than a Model Y RWD

The Golf R is 4.7 seconds and still cheaper than a Model Y RWD

Yeah sub 7 isn’t a quick car. Not these days and not in the last 20 years. Honestly it’s not. You can’t pretend it is. We can probably agree on this Y variant as mildly brisk with a tailwind 😂

BMW X3 30i is six seconds. 2L petrol inline 4. Closer to what the MY is competing against.

MSRP is around $50,000 US but most customers buy them on heavily discounted finance offers. BMW North America don't offer rebates or money off because it "cheapens the brand" They hide the substantial discounts in the finance offer.

"I'm driving a $55,000 car, but only paying $325 a month." . . .

By the time you spec then up to match a Tesla model Y RWD , they will cost more.

I had a BMW 420d auto that was 7.4ish and that was 8 years ago. Sub 7 seconds and slower than 6 seconds hasn’t been quick since the 90s.

I will grant that Tesla M3 Performance models have redefined what supercar straight line acceleration means, but not the bog standard RWD models.

Yes not much comparing this to ICE hot hatches of yesteryear or even today quite frankly.

6 to 7 seconds is anything but quick, it’s as I said mildly brisk.

sub 5 is quick
Sub 4 is really quick
Sub 3 is current supercar quick
Anything between 2.5? and 3 is shit off a shovel quick.

Unless we’re talking 2 wheels in which case I’ll rewrite my post completely.

The thing is my wife’s Volvo C40 Single Motor FWD is 7.4 seconds 0-60 and I find the more than adequate for an everyday car. So 6.6 is clearly even better, but to describe it as anything more than “brisk” is eyebrow raising.

At least here we pay tax for ICE cars based on emissions, so only basic GTI is slightly cheaper. Factor in fuel price and other costs and then even the basic GTI is more expensive to run.

Going back to the OP, I personally don’t think the RWD model Y will be THE car that “be the nail in the coffin” for ICE. Far from it honestly, certainly in Europe and UK.

The nail in the coffin will be a small, cheeky, well priced hatchback that needs to knock the socks of the Ford Fiesta / Puma. A proper Polo / Golf replacement. Sorry that’s none of the current crop of VW ID.’s and I think clearly the market agrees.

Feels like the best chance of that will be something from the Chinese names. Unless the Europeans pull a blinder. Tesla seems happy to milk the 3 and Y bandwagon for as long as they can and is there a sign of a model 2 yet? All I’m seeing is CyberTruck nonsense stateside.

The MG4 51kWh comes close. Quite basic spec but about the same cost and size as a Golf/Focus. The only letdown is the combined 210/155 summer/winter range. Once we get to 250/200 summer winter range for £25k for a new Golf sized EV, that will be the turning point.

Edit: well as long as the infrastructure supports home charging for those without off street parking.

We've been talking about 'turning points' for some years - it is more of a shift than a sudden switch.

I posted a deal for 250/200 mile MG ZS a couple of weeks ago for £26.3k - even a grand cheaper it isn't suddenly going to kill off ICE sales.

But it doesn't hurt 😄

£26.3k for a 73kWh MG ZS (albeit entry spec - cloth seats rather than pleather and 4 speakers instead of 6)... best new EV bargain at the moment:

p.s. deal no longer available on DTD

Yep given the spread, volume and price of what’s about to hit our shores, from a vehicle perspective the Goldilocks moment seems pretty close.

Public charging is going gangbusters this last year especially
